How Star Wars Games Could End 2024 with a Bang

2024 has been a fairly eventful year for Star Wars video games, all things considered. Back in August, Ubisoft released the somewhat divisive open world action-adventure game Star Wars Outlaws for PC and current-generation consoles. Zynga, meanwhile, launched the 1.0 version of the PvP shooter Star Wars Hunters on Nintendo Switch and mobile phones in June. Respawn Entertainment was in the spotlight this year as well, as its Soulslike-inspired action game, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, came to PS4 and Xbox One in mid-September, roughly a year after its launch on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. The Embracer Group subsidiary Aspyr also ported a couple of classic Star Wars games to modern platforms in 2024, including Star Wars: Bounty Hunter and the first two Star Wars: Battlefront titles.

When it comes to new Star Wars game announcements, however, there hasn’t been a lot going on. There are a handful of upcoming SW titles in development, but they’ve received next-to-no updates in 2024 so far. Perhaps the most noteworthy of these games are Star Wars: Eclipse and the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. Although they were both announced more than three years ago, it’s still unclear when these games will be released, if ever. As such, a potential SW: Eclipse or KOTOR remake announcement at The Game Awards in December would not only shed some light on the status of these projects, but would also be the perfect way to cap 2024 off for Star Wars fans.

Star Wars Eclipse is the Next Big Game from Quantic Dream, and It’s Still a Ways Off

Out of the two aforementioned Star Wars games, Star Wars: Eclipse is probably the most elusive of the lot. This title was unveiled during The Game Awards 2021 with a lengthy CGI trailer that didn’t have a single snippet of gameplay. Even though it’s being developed by Quantic Dream, the French studio behind interactive adventure games like Detroit: Become Human and Heavy Rain, it will seemingly feature more of an emphasis on combat compared to the company’s previous works. However, the game will still have a “branching,” Telltale-style narrative with choices and consequences.

Updates on Star Wars: Eclipse have been sparse, to say the least. The last time Quantum Dream clued fans in on the development of the game was in September 2023, when a representative from the company told IGN that “it exists,” but is “just not ready.” More than a year has passed since then, but it seems like Star Wars: Eclipse is still a long way off, given that the game’s lead writer left Quantic Dream in August 2024. Fans may have to wait a few more years to get their hands on Star Wars: Eclipse, but any new trailers or bits of information on the game, no matter how small, would be welcomed at this point.

Development on the KOTOR Remake Has Been Troubled, But It’s Still in the Works

The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake was revealed at a PlayStation Showcase in 2021 but, like SW: Eclipse, the game is still nowhere to be found. It’s no secret that this remake has had a troubled development cycle so far. The game was originally going to be created by Aspyr and released as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive, but after Sony reportedly pulled funding on the project, it’s now being helmed by Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 developer Saber Interactive. According to the CEO of Embracer Group, the company that’s publishing the game, the KOTOR remake is still in the works, at least as of April 2024.

The original Knights of the Old Republic is widely regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time, so remaking the game while still keeping its original essence intact will be no easy feat. Saber Interactive is a studio with a storied legacy, but it hasn’t really worked on large-scale remakes like this before, so it’ll be interesting to see just how the company will handle KOTOR. If its release is not that far out, maybe fans will get a glimpse of this Star Wars game later this year. Though this is purely hopeful speculation, it would certainly be a great way to cap off what has been a solid 2024 for Star Wars games.
