According to a social media post, some cards from the upcoming Magic: The Gathering crossover set with Final Fantasy have leaked due to an early shipment. The Magic: The Gathering cards in question are from the Final Fantasy Starter Kit, which features Final Fantasy 7 lead characters Cloud and Sephiroth, among other franchise characters.

In October 2024, Wizards of the Coast announced that the Final Fantasy franchise would join other brands like Assassin’s Creed and Marvel’s Spider-Man as part of Magic: The Gathering‘s ongoing Universes Beyond expansion series. The Final Fantasy booster set will come with four Commander Decks featuring popular protagonists Tidus, Cloud, Terra, and Y’shtola, along with dastardly villains like Kefka, Sephiroth, and Emet-Selch. However, two months ahead of Final Fantasy‘s debut in Magic: The Gathering, the Starter Kit for the upcoming expansion has shipped early. According to a post on the r/FinalFantasy subreddit, a Brazilian user claimed that the Final Fantasy Starter Kit has broken its street date. While the Final Fantasy cards they obtained were printed in Spanish, over 120 cards were shown off across four screenshots, with some cards being printed multiple times per deck. The Starter Kit comes with two ready-to-play decks that contain 60 cards each, with Final Fantasy 7‘s Cloud leading a Red and White deck and Sephiroth commanding a Blue and Black deck.

Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy Starter Kit Was Leaked Two Months Before Release

  • The Final Fantasy Starter Kit for Magic: The Gathering was leaked two months before its June release.
  • The Starter Kit features Cloud and Sephiroth as the main commanders, along with several franchise references.
  • Cloud’s Deck includes characters like Freya and Beatrix, while Sephiroth’s Deck features Ultimecia.
  • The full Magic: The Gathering crossover set with Final Fantasy launches June 13.

The Starter Kit is currently available for pre-order on Amazon for $20. Various locales, such as Final Fantasy 4‘s Mount Ordeals and Final Fantasy 12‘s Royal City of Rabanastre, were referenced as Lands that can be tapped and used to fuel spells or summon legendary creatures. Other Final Fantasy franchise heroes, such as Beatrix, Freya, and Steiner from Final Fantasy 9, along with Final Fantasy 13 protagonist Lightning, were confirmed to be legendary creature cards in Cloud’s deck.

By contrast, Sephiroth’s starter deck included Final Fantasy 8 antagonist Ultimecia, along with weapons like Zenos’ Magitek Scythe from Final Fantasy 14. Additionally, iconic Final Fantasy moments, like Sabin’s Suplex of the Phantom Train, were included as spell cards that can be cast to counter creatures or artifacts.

Though rumors must be taken with a fine grain of salt, other cards from the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set have yet to be revealed at the time of writing. It remains to be seen which Final Fantasy franchise characters will appear in Magic: The Gathering once the expansion is fully released.
