It’s always exciting when studios take a swing at something new, and so building on the foundations of Diamond Dynasty, MLB The Show 25 introduces Diamond Quest, a board game that lets you earn more players to add to your roster.
It’s time to step off the field and onto the board for a rogue-lite mini-game to complete challenges and earn yourself some shiny new players for your team. Here’s everything you’ll need to know about Diamond Quest as you chase baseball immortality.
What Is Diamond Quest?
Diamond Quest is a new mode you can find in the single-player menu of Diamond Dynasty. Players are presented with a board, which they must navigate around, completing challenges in exchange for treasure. Similar to other roguelite games, if you want to keep everything you’ve earned, you’ll need to beat one final mission, the Stadium Challenge.
How To Play Diamond Quest
After entering Diamond Quest, you’ll be presented with a handful of quests to choose from. Some may have restrictions on your squad, so make sure to adjust your lineup accordingly. Each quest will offer different rare and epic rewards, so choose the one that looks most appealing to you.
You will not earn these rewards simply for completing the board and finishing a Stadium Challenge.
When you reach a Stadium Challenge square and are ready to finish your run, you will be prompted to select a difficulty level for the final challenge.
Click Square/X/Y during initial quest selection to see what the odds of earning these rewards on each difficulty are.
Once you’re on the board, you’ll begin rolling a six-sided die to move among all the squares. As you’re traveling and uncover each square, you may be stopped and asked to complete an action, the most common being standard encounters.
Encounters ask you to complete simple tasks, usually getting a hit, securing a save, or securing a clutch RBI. Succeeding will earn you a Perk, a buff to your players’ skills that will be reflected for the rest of your run, but if you lose, you’ll be given a Penalty debuff. Thankfully, Penalties expire after your next encounter.
You will also automatically be given a Perk for rolling a six, and a Penalty for rolling a one.
Coach’s Cart
Encounters won’t be the only activities you’ll find when exploring the board. You may land on a space that gifts you Peanuts, a currency that can be spent at Coach’s Cart. Once you find Coach’s shop, you can spend any collected Peanuts on Perks, some of which are quite powerful!
Mini Bosses
As you traverse the squares, you’ll find some encounters that have higher stakes than others. Finding a Mini Boss will thrust you into a challenge that can not only earn you regular spoils, but also significantly increase the odds of getting the quest’s rare and epic rewards when you make your way to the Stadium Challenge! Unfortunately, losing will still saddle you with a penalty.
Zone Sweeper
You aren’t completely safe while you navigate each stadium; the Zone Sweeper is always looking for you. Stylized as an angry baseball, the Zone Sweeper will move each time you do, sometimes in direct pursuit. If you both land on the same square, it will challenge you. Beating it will earn you many items, but losing will see it eat some of your peanuts.
Stadium Challenges
When you’re ready to leave and collect your treasure, it’s time to make your way to the Stadium Challenge square. These are clearly marked upon starting a quest, appropriately represented by a stadium. Once you land on it, you’ll be prompted to select a difficulty for the final encounter, indicating how likely it is you’ll leave with your rare and epic rewards.
If you win, you’ll be able to keep all the treasure you earned, plus rare and epic cards if the odds fell in your favor. Lose, and everything you’ve done will be for naught, and you’ll need to restart on a brand-new, randomized board if you want to take another shot.
Some quests have multiple Stadium Challenges. If you successfully complete one, you’ll be asked if you want to exit the mode and keep what you’ve acquired, or stay and risk it all going for more.
