South Of Midnight: Beginner Tips

South Of Midnight: Beginner Tips

In South of Midnight, you’re tasked with surviving and exploring a magical, pulsating swamp in the Deep South on the trail of your mama. You’ll battle twisted foes, scale destroyed shacks, and wander far and wide through the twisting vines of the swamp to progress forward.

Along the way, these tips will help you get the best out of your journey. They’ll help you survive any enemy you come across and uncover each and every secret the world has to offer, all while making sure you’re always as strong and equipped as you can be. It’s a tough, dark road, but somebody’s got to walk it.

Hazel flipping a metal sheet in South of Midnight

Scattered throughout South of Midnight’s levels, you’ll find sheets of corrugated iron. Flipping them over with RT will net you an Achievement the first time you do it, and will almost always give you some Floofs. These might be lying on the grass or up against a wall, and not all of them flip, but the ones that do keep your Floof count full.

There’s usually only five Floofs under each sheet, but over time, they all add up. They’re also often a in a wider area of an island or other location, which means going after them can sometimes open up a new path to other Floofs. Remember kids – always flip a lucky.

How To Replay Chapters

Since South of Midnight is ane extremely linear game, you won’t get to go back to any areas after the first time around. That means if you’ve missed a Health Filament or need some extra Floofs, you’ll need to dive back in. However, the game doesn’t make it all that obvious how you’re actually meant to do that.

If you go into the Storybook menu, this only replays the opening cutscene to catch you up on the plot, but does not take you to that level. Instead, you’ll need to quit back to the main menu, then select Load Game. From your save file here, you’ll see an option to Replay Chapter.

If You Can See It, You Can Go There

Again, because South of Midnight is so linear, if you can currently see a collectible or location, that means you can currently get to said collectible or location. It may not be on the main path, and you may need to deal with some nearby combat first, but there will always be a way.

Very few of South of Midnight’s collectibles require any backtracking at all, while none need you to unlock tools in later levels then replay them. Ignore the trail for the main path and wander around corners if you can see collectibles, and you’ll find a way to grab whatever you can see.

But Watch Out For Water

The only exception to this rule are distant islands. South of Midnight uses water to keep you trapped in small spaces, so if you see an island in the background, it’s probably just for decoration. Unless you can see a collectible or some anchor for you to swing to it, those islands can be safely ignored.

Water is toxic in South of Midnight, so there’s no swimming or diving for hidden collectibles – just stay on land and you’ll be alright.

Spread Your Upgrades

As you progress through South of Midnight, you’ll be able to spend your Floofs on different upgrades. However, these are level-gated, so you can’t just rush through one tree then move onto the next. You can check out our full breakdown of what upgrades to get here, but the basics depend on how you want to play.

If you’re going to be trying to grab as many Floofs as possible, the you should spread your upgrades, buying each one as it becomes available. If you’re a more linear player, you won’t be able to afford them all, so should stick to one or two trees (General and Weave being the most sensible) and conserve your Floofs until each of their branches become available.

3

Always Follow The Foxes

Throughout South of Midnight, you’ll encounter several animals freely wandering the swamps. These will flee as they see you, but it’s a good idea to follow them. Most of the time, they lead to a small, hidden area of any given island or location where you can grab more Floofs.

Sometimes they’ll lead you directly to a collectible, other times they will disappear into a bush or twist of thorn vines, but there’s usually a way around (or a path for Crouton) that leads you to wherever they’re going.

2

Target One Enemy At A Time

Combat in South of Midnight can get very hectic. Though there aren’t dozens of enemy types, once you encounter one it tends to appear in every subsequent battle, meaning things get very crowded by the end. In the interest of whittling down as many as possible as quickly as possible, you should limit direct attacks to one at a time wherever able.

That doesn’t mean you should focus entirely on one creature. It is a good idea to posses a big enemy with Crouton and pull another enemy close, for example. But when it comes to your basic attacks, locking on can help thin the herd in the shortest time.

Use Heals Wisely

Hazel healing in South of Midnight

At the start of each combat encounter, there will be a glowing green orb to heal yourself with. In boss battles, there might be two. These can be vital in keeping you alive when the odds are against you, and there’s no penalty or even time delay when using them, so take advantage of them.

Just be careful not to go too early. Unravelling enemies offers minor healing too, and if you start a battle just a little bit off max, you don’t want to heal immediately. Doing it this way means you won’t get the full benefit of the healing, especially when you can probably make up that ground by unravelling weak enemies early on. When you restart, it’s always at full health, and you can’t store additional health, so just play it as it lays.
