Summary
- One of the functions of the Switch 2 C button could be connecting the console to the original Switch, which would be able to act as its controller, according to a new rumor.
- A screen-equipped gamepad would, in theory, provide the Switch 2 with everything needed for emulating Wii U, 3DS, and DS games.
- The real purpose of the mysterious C button—which isn’t actually marked with a C in Nintendo’s official renders—may be revealed on April 2, the date of the first-ever Switch 2 Nintendo Direct.
The so-called C button found on the Switch 2 will be used for connecting the console to the original Switch, according to a new report from an established leaker. However, this might not be the only function of the mysterious Switch 2 button.
Nintendo’s upcoming console has leaked on many occasions in the run-up to its January 16 announcement. The entire latest batch of leaked Switch 2 renders showcased a new square button with a “C” marking, located just below the Home button on the right Joy-Con. The console’s official reveal confirmed the existence of this button, but with one notable difference: the renders showcased by Nintendo didn’t include the letter C or any other markings on the key. However, the unofficial “C button” nickname stuck with the fandom post-announcement.

Rumor: New Switch 2 Pre-Order Date Possibly Leaked
An industry insider leaks the supposed start date for Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders, as well as some other availability details about the device.
While fan speculation about the purpose of the Switch 2 C button continues, Extas1s may have now uncovered some concrete information on the matter. During his latest rumor roundup video, the Spanish leaker claimed that the button will be usable for connecting the device to the original Switch, which will then be able to function as a secondary controller. This would essentially turn the first Switch into a Wii U GamePad-like accessory for its successor.
A Screen-Equipped Switch 2 Controller Has One Obvious Benefit
The most obvious immediate benefit of a screen-equipped Switch 2 controller is that it would theoretically provide Nintendo’s upcoming device with everything it needs to emulate Wii U, DS, and 3DS games. This would also finally identify a common use case for the Switch touchscreen, which was largely left underutilized throughout the console’s eight-year lifecycle. Moreover, the ability to have its predecessor act as a controller would vindicate a late 2024 rumor claiming the Switch 2 would somehow have two screens—a claim fans dismissed as false following the console’s announcement.
Nintendo Switch 2 C Button May Have Multiple Functions
Extas1s also reports that connecting the Switch 2 to the original Switch may not be the only purpose of the console’s mysterious new button. According to a recent datamine of the Switch OS, the Switch 2 C button could have something to do with a chat feature code-named Campus. The discovery of references to this technology in the Switch 1 OS also supports Extas1s’s suggestion that the button on the new console may have something to do with the device that preceded it.
A Switch 2-focused Nintendo Direct is scheduled for April 2. The event is expected to yield new information about the upcoming device, possibly including the purpose of its mysterious new button. Nintendo may also announce the Switch 2 price, release date, and launch game lineup on that date.
