In an interview with Bleeding Cool News, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy editor Jon Dudkowski compared the series to Buffy The Vampire Slayer. He said:
“The new series I’m working on ‘Starfleet Academy’ has it has some great comedic moments. The young cadets and their energy. It’s got a little bit of that ‘Buffy’ banter and fun where every week something insane is happening, and they’re looking at each other and going, ‘Is this happening?! Did you see what just happened down the hallway?! Oh, my God!'”

While Buffy The Vampire Slayer had sad episodes and some gruesome character deaths, the beloved series does have a great sense of humor, and it’s great to hear that so does Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The Paramount+ series is set during the 32nd century and focuses on cadets learning how to work as officers. Buffy‘s intense moments were always balanced out by humorous ones, and it sounds like the same thing is true of Paramount+’s upcoming Star Trek series. As Dudkowski mentioned, the clever and fast-paced dialogue between characters such as Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon), Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter), and Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan) makes Buffy stand out among many other supernatural or sci-fi series.
Dudkowski has lent his editing talents to several popular series, including Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Umbrella Academy, Fringe, White Collar, and The Man in the High Castle. He has said many positive things about the WB/CW drama starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and has also talked about the upcoming Buffy revival. He told Bleeding Cool News, “Buffy was near and dear to my heart” and “If anybody can pull it off, they’re the ones.”
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy includes cast members Paul Giamatti who is playing a villain and Holly Hunter, who is the Starfleet Academy chancellor and captain. Tatiana Maslany, Tig Notaro, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Robert Picardo also star in the series. Robert Picardo is reprising his Star Trek: Voyager role of the Emergency Medical Hologram, The Doctor. Co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman has a long history with the Star Trek universe. Kurtzman wrote, directed, and produced an episode of Star Trek: Discovery, wrote several episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks, and worked as a writer on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Picard. Co-showrunner Noga Landau developed The CW drama Nancy Drew along with Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, and was the co-showrunner along with Melinda Hsu Taylor.
While Star Trek: Starfleet Academy doesn’t have a release date, Robert Picardo said during an appearance on The Agenda in 2024, “I’ve heard early 2026.” In October 2024, Variety reported that the series had been renewed for a second season. It sounds like the show will definitely be worth the wait.
