Originally released in North America in 2006, the Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop series stepped aside from the classic pet-caring gameplay of the Tamagotchi franchise to enter the shop simulation genre. While it was popular among Nintendo DS players, the Tamagotchi Corner Shop saga had not received a new entry since 2008. Fortunately for fans, the latest March 27 Nintendo Direct livestream confirmed that the cozy shop simulator series is finally making a comeback nearly 20 years later.

Publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment unveiled a release date and trailer for Tamagotchi Plaza, the latest entry in the Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop series. In Tamagotchi Plaza, players are asked to become shopkeepers in Tamahiko Town, where the Tamagotchi Fest will be held. Players must help Prince Tamahiko bring life to the town by opening and growing shops. Tamagotchi Plaza offers 12 different shops to manage, like a dental clinic and an eyewear shop, each with its own relaxing mini-games. Fans will have to satisfy customers to upgrade the stores and meet over 100 Tamagotchi around town. Both new and classic Tamagotchi can be encountered, including the fan-favorite mascots Mametchi, Kuchipatchi, and Memetchi. One new game-exclusive Tamagotchi will also be introduced. Tamagotchi Plaza will join the list of cozy Nintendo Switch games on June 27, 2025.

Some shops in Tamagotchi Plaza will have offline two-player co-op mini-games for both collaboration and competition. According to the developers, the game will also feature a linking function with Tamagotchi Uni, a recent toy model currently on sale. Using the linkage function will let players unlock exclusive items and special events in Tamagotchi Plaza, though Tamagotchi Uni is not available worldwide. Tamagotchi Plaza was not the only popular Nintendo franchise that revealed a surprise comeback. A new Tomodachi Life game is also coming to Nintendo Switch, but its release is planned for 2026.
