Baldur’s Gate 3: How the Strange Ox Exemplifies Good D&D Worldbuilding
One of Baldur’s Gate 3’s most memorable side quests can be an important lesson for D&D Dungeon Masters in immersion and worldbuilding.
While there have been calls for some DLC, it seems as though there will be no post-launch paid content to supplement Baldur’s Gate 3, which is a refreshing change of pace that assures players everything they’ll need to get the fullest experience of the game comes with one purchase. And that definition of ‘everything’ becomes much broader once mods come into the picture. For PS5 players, perhaps scorned by the console’s handling of Skyrim mods, there are a host of Baldur’s Gate 3 mods that enhance one of the game’s most fundamental features – its classes.
Updated on March 26, 2025, by William Buckley: Baldur’s Gate 3 has only seen increased popularity as the fanbase discovers more about this game and the developers continue to fine-tune the title with in-depth patches, including the upcoming Patch 8, which is slated to add a myriad of extra subclasses to the game. It’s not just Larian who are continuing to put in work on the g,ame however, as modders are also similarly enhancing their own tweaks to the game, and adding more opportunities for players to customize their BG3 experience.

Mystic Class
A Refreshing Take On The UA Class
The sadly forgotten Mystic class for D&D left to linger in Unearthed Arcana lives on in a few telekinetic-themed classes that, despite the themes of BG3, fail to make a vanilla appearance. Luckily for PS5 players, there is a solution for those looking to reimagine this psychic-oriented class.
This Mystic mod does more than just implement it into the game, it breathes new life into the class, making it faithful to BG3‘s interpretation of D&D and actually keeping it balanced among other classes to boot.

Witch Class
A Spooky Spin On The Wizard Class
Nuto123 has created a feature-complete intelligence-based caster that can help bring players’ witchy fantasies to life. As an archetype often seen in different media, the Witch isn’t an easy concept to emulate in vanilla D&D. Certainly, wizards and druids can go a long way towards solving this, with spells that summon familiars or evoke the darker side of nature to help bring out anyone’s inner witch, but there isn’t a clear-cut class that brings out that black-robed “double, double, toil and trouble” vibe which so many players crave.
Fixing this is an entirely new class, complete with five subclasses from Nuto123. The Witch mechanically acts as a diabolical fusion of sorcerer, wizard, and druid, taking pieces of spellcraft from all three classes without the end result feeling bloated or over-designed. Some subclasses, such as the Hex and Frost Witch, are a great way to bring some Hag flavor into gameplay, while others are more support-focused, such as the Herbalist. Still a work in progress, this mod promises to bring even more witch flavor to Baldur’s Gate 3 in the future.

Tasha’s Cauldron Of Everything: Feats
Leveling Up Has More Class Customization Options Than Ever
- Mod Creator: thelucidfrog, Tdakh
- Mod Link
One of the best things to come out of Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything (and there are a few) was the expanded selection of feats available for players to browse and choose from. These feats added a great level of flavor and utility to players of all classes.
This mod faithfully adds most of these feats into the game as selectable feats—all balanced and immersively fitting in with the same mechanics shifts BG3 made to take the 5e experience to the digital scene.

Mind Weaver Class
A Unique Telekinetic Class
One of the great things to see in D&D more broadly is the sheer amount of homebrew content that makes it into the public eye. D&D 5e has had ten years of homebrew classes and features, and it’s fantastic to see how quickly something similar was picked up in BG3.
The Mind Weaver class borrows from all sorts of classes, with some subclasses leaning towards a wizard playstyle and some more hybrid martial style. It takes a unique spin of psychic classes distinct from the UA Mystic while also managing to remain balanced.

Dread Overlord
A Dark, Necromantic Warlock Patron
The Warlock has always been a great class for those who want a character with a bit more darkness to their build flavor. Certainly, pacts such as the Archfey and Genie show that not all Warlocks need to be brooding, menacing cultists, but for those who want to double-down on this stereotype and reap its rewards, this entirely unique Patron subclass has players serving the whim of a malignant dracolich who promises great power to its followers. Lichs and dragons, what more could a Warlock ask for?
Mod creator TheDreadOverlord has gone above and beyond with the Dread Overlord subclass, adding in a unique soul-harvesting mechanic to enhance the Warlock class’ summoning capabilities and combat utility, as well as a unique subclass-centric questline that features installments in all three acts, specifically built to help make Tav feel like an Origin character with their own place and story in the world. Those wanting a necromancer experience that goes beyond vanilla BG3 will be hard-pressed to find a mod as comprehensive as this one.
4
Blood Mage
A Powerful Class Using Dark Magic
Blood magic is a fascinating magical system, especially popular in the Dragon Age series but with a few recognized manifestations in D&D, notably Matt Mercer’s Blood Magic subclass for mages. This mod goes beyond subclasses and makes an entire class based around this dark art.
It comes with a host of distinct and nuanced subclasses perfect for Blood Mages of all stripes. Candidly, this class is a little overpowered. Its spells scale off constitution, and being able to dump everything into a single stat that both increases health, saving throws against some nasty effects and spell power will just naturally be overpowered. But it’s by no means an easy mode for the game and gives the player some satisfying powers.
3
Arcane Vanguard
A Unique Take On Hybrid Classes
An ambitious class mod that looks to do what many games aspire to do and give players an authentic magic knight experience in-game. A true magic/martial hybrid has sort of been like the Holy Grail of D&D homebrew classes in that many have tried to find it, but seldom few have.
The Arcane Vanguard does an excellent job of it, however, with each subclass having a unique flare and a unique spin on the class’ overall philosophy, which is empowering melee attacks after spells and empowering spells after melee attacks.
2
Battlemage
An Exciting Blend Of Might And Magic
In the annals of homebrewed D&D classes, there is no archetype so highly sought after, so highly venerated, as the intelligence-based martial/caster hybrid, aka. the Battlemage. Making a good homebrew blend of the two major cores of D&D’s combat, based on arguably one of the most important stats in the game, without it becoming overpowered or undercooked, is a feat in its own right, but this mod goes above and beyond in making sure the Battlemage class is a valuable, powerful, but balanced class that brings much to the table when fighting in Baldur’s Gate 3.
While other mods on this list, such as Arcane Vanguard, focus on spellcasters that can also use their weapons, this mod very much takes the concept of an Eldritch Knight—a warrior that can cast spells—and expands upon it to make its own class with unique mechanics and functions. The Arcane Knight subclass is the truest mixture of martial and magical elements, while the Arcane Guardian takes on a more defensive role, and the Witch Hunter provides a satisfying experience in both ranged and melee combat while taking on horrors and aberrations.
1
Unholy Smite
A Powerful Oathbreaker Rework
Unholy Smite brings a new level of dynamism to the Oathbreaker Paladins. This makes the Paladin class more well-rounded in general by bringing this secret subclass up to par with the others of its ilk. Players will no longer need to feel like they have to choose between the flavor of an oathbreaker or the function of the more well-realized ‘official’ Paladin subclasses.
The major feature of this smite is the debilitate effect which greatly weakens the players’ foes and makes them unable to break through the Oathbreakers’ sheer intimidating form – an excellent and flavorful rework of this class.
