How to upgrade weapons in Atomfall

How do you upgrade guns in Atomfall? If you’ve been exploring the quarantine zone for a while, odds are that you’ve already amassed a small collection of firearms to defend yourself. However, you’ve also probably noticed that these weapons are rusty, slow, and less powerful than you’d like. Thankfully, there’s an easy way to fix that.

While it’s not immediately apparent in the sandbox game’s early hours, guns in Atomfall have three tiers of quality: rusty, stock, and pristine. While you can pick stock-tier weapons in the military complex around Skethermoor Prison, the best Atomfall weapons must be upgraded.

To upgrade weapons in Atomfall, first unlock the Gunsmith skill, then navigate to the ‘Upgrades’ category in the crafting menu to see all guns you can upgrade, plus the ingredients required to craft them.

Gunsmith is a Survival skill that can only be unlocked via the Crafting Manual; if you haven’t picked it up yet, our Atomfall training manual locations guide can show you the way.

Atomfall’s crafting menu only shows you the upgrade requirement for guns you’ve already picked up on your playthrough. Any new guns you find are automatically added to the list when you pick them up.

To upgrade a specific weapon, you must acquire a duplicate of that weapon at the same tier, along with a variable amount of gun oil and scrap.

For example, upgrading a rusty revolver to pristine quality requires you to craft four rusty revolvers into two stock-quality revolvers, which can then be upgraded into one pristine-quality revolver. Alternatively, you could hold out for stock-quality drops to save time and crafting materials.
