The Chimera Ants are among the strongest creatures in Hunter X Hunter. They can cause global disasters if the early stages of their breeding are not controlled on time. Things escalated fast when the Ant Queen started devouring humans. The resulting breed could control Nen and has great potential to evolve.

Many of them displayed control over their Nen to the level of the strongest hunters in the anime. This made them fierce foes to be reckoned with, as their abilities were often unpredictable. The Ant King, Meruem, is the strongest among them all, but a lot of his subjects cause equal trouble for Gon and his allies. The strongest of the forces had to be gathered to take them on.

Colt
Colt was the first born human-like Chimera Ant, and holds a special place in the Queen’s heart, making him a Squadron leader. He tried to keep check and balance among the Chimera Ants and prevented others from going overboard. He helped humanity against the Chimera Ant King who killed his dear mother in front of his eyes.
Like his human counterpart Kurt, he has a strong desire to protect those he loves. When the Chimera Ant Queen is on the brink of death, he begs humans to treat her. He also took care of Kite, who was born alongside the King, and raised the little ant like a parent.
Kite’s soul merges with Reina, who was Kurt’s little sister.

Leol
Leol has a few memories of his past life as a Lion, which is also shown by his prideful nature. Leol often hunted just for fun, even though his quota for bringing bodies to the Ant Queen was complete. While he once sought to be King, he started to serve under the King for a chance to climb above the ranks.
He is slightly cunning as he doesn’t reveal all his cards until he starts fighting Morel in the Church. He displayed some surprising abilities that slightly caught Morel off guard. Leol can borrow the Nen abilities of other users, which makes him versatile in battles.

Ikalgo
Ikalgo is a Chimera Ant who was an Octopus in his past life, a fact he hated because he admired squids more. He never had real friends, so he was moved when Killua treated him like one. He resolved to do anything for the sake of his comrades and played an active role during the invasion of the palace.
However, he lacked the resolve to take a life during his mission, which led him to feel extremely sorry for his friends. He later redeemed his actions by threatening Welfin without killing him and found Palm’s location, who was a missing comrade in the party.

Shaiapouf
Shaiapouf seems the frailest among the Chimera Ants, however, his cunning nature has helped him overcome battles against tough opponents such as Morel. His moves are flashy as he uses his Butterfly Wings to spread pollen that can hypnotize people. His Manipulative Nen also lets him split his body into small copies no larger than a fly.
While he is smart, he often acts irrationally due to his strong obsession with Meruem. Shaiapouf often fails to understand him and gets rebuked for it. He shows his displeasure with the King’s fixation over Komugi and thinks that the girl prevents him from focusing.

Neferpitou
Pitou is the most fearsome out of all the Royal Guards. She instills hatred in Gon after taking down Kite, who was one of his closest allies. Her strong Nen can detect people from far away, which also makes invading the palace very challenging.
Pitou has a maniacal nature as, after killing her enemies, she reincarnates them as puppets and controls their minds. Among all the royal subjects, Meruem trusts Pitou the most, as she is the most rational one of all. She didn’t hesitate to beg Gon not to fight with her as she was busy healing Komugi for the King’s sake.

Menthuthuyoupi
Menthuthuyoupi, also known as Youpi for short, is an all-brawn and no-brain character quite literally when he first made his appearance. His physical strength excels all other Royal Guards, and he doesn’t hold back during combat. He is also easily provoked, especially if an opponent uses a dirty trick against him.
His only goal is to protect Meruem, and for that purpose, he would leave an opponent without finishing them off. He later evolved into a much stronger ant, who also tricked Knuckle into almost defeating him. Youpi also developed respect for his enemies and acknowledged Knuckles’s strength at the end of the battle, claiming that it wasn’t worth defeating him right now.

Chimera Ant Queen
The Chimera Ant Queen was the start of the entire biological crisis where the Chimera Ants tried to rule the human world. After consuming people, she developed a taste for them and asked her soldiers to bring more of these creatures. She was obsessed with birthing a healthy king who would take over the world.
Her instinctive actions are cruel to humanity as she orders the ants to bring thousands of bodies to her every day. Things kept escalating faster in the anime as these ants also learned to command Nen. Despite her greedy nature, she has a motherly side to her. The Ant Queen cared about the King even on her deathbed.

Meruem
Meruem is the ruthless king of the Chimera Ants, who wouldn’t tolerate even the slightest inconvenience or disrespect. Upon his birth, he killed the Ant Queen, who was his mother, and left her subjects in agony. Meruem is strong enough to beat even the most powerful hunters, and he quickly gains control over the ruling embassy with his strength.
Meruem is often hard on the three Royal Guards and barely listens to their opinions. He is also interested in learning new strategies, which explains his fondness for board games. He even develops compassion for a human girl who practised Gungi with him. Meruem also respects tough opponents and believes that they belong to the world that he is trying to create.
While Meruem considered humans inferior initially, he started to develop an interest in their kind after meeting Komugi.
