With the Immortal Pillars expansion in Age of Mythology: Retold, three new gods join the Chinese pantheon: Shennong, Fuxi, and Nuwa. Each of these gods brings unique mechanics, making the Chinese pantheon distinct and well-designed. Additionally, the expansion introduces the short campaign Pillars of the Gods.
This nine-chapter campaign follows Huangdi ascending to godhood and granting immortality to a hero named Huang Zhaowu. However, his wife Xiaoli cannot receive this blessing and dies. Huang Zhaowu, unable to get help from the gods, turns against them, sparking war and chaos in China. We’ve ranked the chapters of this campaign for you!

Chapter One: Shennong’s Chosen
Chaos Calls, Heroes Answer
As explained in the prologue, the campaign’s first chapter follows the aftermath of Huang Zhaowu’s defiance of the gods. His actions shake the world, sparking chaos and war. In response, the monk Cangjie is chosen by Shennong to intervene. He revives a fallen warrior, Yan Feifeng, who rises as a hero. However, Huang Zhaowu’s soldiers mistake you for part of Huangdi’s army.
This chapter is straightforward—you’ll gather allies while clashing with enemy forces, but there’s no base-building or deep strategy involved. At the end, you meet the legendary archer Houyi, though his arrogance keeps him from listening. Instead, he insists on facing Huang Zhaowu alone.

Chapter Four: The God Trap
Conquer The Pillar, Unveil The God Trap!
In this chapter, Houyi, Cangjie, and Yan Feifeng manage to find one of the Immortal Pillars, with their goal being to locate the God Trap relic to defeat the war god Chiyou. However, they encounter Chiyou near the pillar first. Unfortunately, this chapter doesn’t require much strategy as you’re not allowed to build a base.

You rescue units trapped by Chiyou’s scouts, but your army suffers casualties. While you can’t find the God Trap, you can gather resources at the Ancient Temple or buy myth units and upgrades. Finding Shennong statues also grants you god powers. After defeating Chiyou’s army and reaching the unbroken pillar, the chapter ends, leaving your heroes questioning why Chiyou hasn’t destroyed his pillar yet.

Chapter Two: Houyi’s Pride
Archers Ready, Victory Awaits!
In this chapter, you control the Great Archer Houyi. Unlike the first chapter, you can now build a base. At the start, you’ll be shocked to find the war god Chiyou meeting with the witch Nuchou, forming an alliance. There’s an unspoken connection between Houyi and Nuchou. After setting up your base, you’ll need to maintain a stable economy, training archers and infantry.
You can’t advance to the Heroic Age or build a temple, so victory depends solely on infantry. After defeating Huang Zhaowu’s forces by capturing the Southern and Northern camps, a stronger enemy appears, but Cangjie and Yan Feifeng save you. At the end, Chiyou and Nuchou join Huang Zhaowu, showcasing his power by destroying the first Immortal Pillar!

Chapter Three: Stronger Together
The Pillar’s Fall Reveals The Truth
In this chapter, Great Archer Houyi finally joins forces with Cangjie and Yan Feifeng. However, the trio witnesses the destruction of one of the Immortal Pillars, which was previously destroyed by Huang Zhaowu. As they approach the ruined pillar, they learn about the Four Pillars of Heaven, which almost broke reality when they collapsed.
Nuwa is mentioned as the one who stopped it. Now, you can use Kuafus, and you can progress from Archaic Age to Heroic Age. Your base will constantly come under attack, requiring strong defenses, while your goal is to reach the witch Nuchou. Enemy waves from the East and West camps will challenge both your defense and offense. Once you reach Nuchou, you’ll discover an ancient relic at Mount Buzhou!

Chapter Eight: Divine Intervention
Your Wonder, Their Destruction
This chapter is a classic must-have—a defensive holdout mission! While Yan Feifeng remains dead, you control Cangjie and Houyi. Your goal? Build a Wonder and survive waves of enemy attacks coming from three sides. The enemy’s objective is simple: stop your Wonder and destroy you. You must reinforce your defenses, maintain a strong army, and hold the line at all costs.

Chapter Five: Overcoming Fixations
Save The Pillar, Unleash Dragons!
This chapter is a blast! Nuchou is still obsessing over Houyi, trying to bring him to her side like a lovestruck anime girl. At the start, you’re racing against time to save an Eternal Pillar from destruction. You begin by choosing between two settlements, each with its own advantages. Your first goal? Destroy the giant siege crossbows before they obliterate the pillar!
Every time you take one down, you get a cool Qinglong dragon. Take out all three, and you’re rewarded with the even cooler Yinglong. Then, the mission shifts to defeating Nuchou and her armies—while fending off her relentless attacks. In the end, Houyi rejects her twisted affection and slays the once-rescued Nuchou. A thrilling, fast-paced chapter with great mechanics and satisfying moments!

Chapter Nine: Duel Of The Deathless
Titan Versus Titan
In the final chapter, Huang Zhaowu reunites with his wife but doesn’t care that Nuwa restored the pillars. Instead, he summons Chiyou, the God of War, using the god trap—but this time, Chiyou is titan-sized! And what do you need to defeat a titan? Another titan! This classic finale demands rushing to summon your titan before Chiyou destroys everything.
He will wipe out Ajax’s base first, then Brokk and Eitri’s, so you must act fast. After defeating Chiyou, you’ll battle Huang Zhaowu one last time. Though he claims to be unstoppable, the heroes trap him with his wife in the God Trap, ending the campaign. While not the most surprising conclusion, an epic titan showdown and a tense final battle make for a solid finale!

Chapter Six: Reality’s Collapse
Race Against Time
In this chapter, our heroes find Huang Zhaowu, who’s about to destroy the pillar. Cangjie feels uneasy about Shennong’s presence. Every six minutes, Huang Zhaowu strikes the pillar with lightning, giving you only 30 minutes to stop him. Constant naval attacks force you to build defenses while amassing an army to reach the pillars.

In the Greek Underworld, you dodge Titans while destroying statues. The Atlantean Underworld? A tower defense challenge! Every pantheon’s Underworld offers something fresh and exciting. But just as Feifeng retrieves the final stone, Huang Zhaowu’s wife, Xiaoli, escapes, ignoring warnings and risking the world’s destruction in her quest for immortality.
