Indie Roguelike Games to Play if You Like Hades
Hades, the roguelike ARPG from Supergiant Games, was one of the biggest hits of 2020, but there are plenty of other indie roguelikes to explore.
Progression is important when it comes to the genre, allowing players to go into run after run and increase in power with each subsequent victory or defeat. In 33 Immortals, this progress is in the form of character buffs to base stats, the unlocking of new relics, but most importantly, powerful perks that can significantly increase the power of the player, some focusing on general buffs, while others are more tailored to a specific build or style, allowing players to pick the set that suits their approach best.

Renewal Of Dust
Keep The Levels Rolling In
- You gain +20%/40%/60%/80%/100% dust when defeating monsters
When traversing through many chambers around the map and taking down countless enemies, the player will build up their dust meter. This allows them to visit a nearby dust shrine, of which there are many, and upgrade one of the three core stats: health, attack, and empathy. This gives an incentive to do some extra fighting before the next chamber and increases the chances that new perks and other progression drops will spawn.
As the stats are what govern the ability to take down elite foes and challenge the boss at the end, this perk is a no-brainer to bring along with basically any weapon, as having higher stats by the end of the ascension fight is going to be beneficial for any playstyle. The game allows the player to freely choose which stat they upgrade, up to a cap, making achieving a high-damaging assassin build or a tanky frontliner effortless. While there are certainly better options for the precious perk slots, this is one to consider as a choice to fill any remaining slots.

Lightbringer
A Head Start From Beyond The Grave
- You start each run with +15/30/45/60/75 bones and +1 key
Resources in 33 Immortals might be shared, but that doesn’t mean they are always plentiful. Within each run, the player can collect multiple currencies for use outside of the battle, progression akin to similar games within the genre, while grabbing bones and keys to unlock extra loot and provide some much-needed health and general buffs to the entire lobby.
By starting the run with a few extra of each, the player can jump straight into a chamber and access the better loot hidden inside the locked chest, rather than leave it behind due to a lack of keys. The extra initial bones can be useful as well, giving the opportunity to pick up an extra teleport to traverse the map easier, heal some teammates before the next fight, or reroll some weaker relics into more useful ones. It is a diverse and useful currency, but this perk does rely on a bit of RNG to see its full potential.

Bold Revolt
Health Is No Longer A Worry
- You gain +20%/40%/60%/80%/100% health when healing from bone shrines
With so much fighting and plenty of barriers to cross to make it through to the end, the player’s health becomes a resource like any other that needs to be managed well and respected due to the scarcity of healing items. The main healing mechanic is locked behind a paywall of bones, providing a decent refill to the players in the immediate area upon purchase.

7 Unique Death Mechanics in Roguelike Games, Ranked
Death is an essential part of the Roguelike experience, but these titles tweak it in interesting ways by introducing unique mechanics.
Now as the bones are also used to acquire keys which give access to additional loot that helps with the run, it does hurt to choose between health and a potential game-changing relic. This perk removes that worry, amping the healing significantly and reducing the need to buy multiple heals across a run, reducing the cost significantly. The utility does fall off after reaching the boss, but it is a nice utility perk that players should consider if they are struggling with the early stages of the game.

Empyreal Deceptiveness
Teamwork Makes The Damage Work
- You deal +100% critical hit damage while your co-strike counter level is above 30/27/24/21/18
One of the most interesting mechanics introduced in the game is the co-strike. Players receive a combo-like bonus for attacking the same target as their allies, which ramps up the critical strike chance and is in the most simple sense, an insane damage buff that incentivizes good focus fire and target priority.
With so many players all shooting at once, co-striking is incredibly easy to build up, particularly against the larger foes, so giving a substantial buff to this universally relevant mechanic is the perfect slot filler. While it does take a second to ramp up when combined with certain relics, the damage amplification is absurd, and the need to charge it up is almost negligible when compared to the immense levels of damage output provided by this single perk.
4
Rejuvenated Vigor
Luck Is On Your Side
- Your chance of finding rare or epic relics increases by 10%/20%/30%/40%/50%.
Like any good roguelite, loot is one of the most important aspects of 33 Immortals. Relics that are found in chests and as drops from elite foes can be game-changing in their abilities, some augmenting basic stats, while others granting a team-wide buff that turns shrines into a walk in the park.
The tiered looting means that some relics have more innate power than others, and the players will want to equip as many epic and rare ones as they can find, as those give the greatest buffs and the best modifications to a run. By upping the odds significantly, the player turns into an absolute unit by the end of the final shrine, holding a list of high-power relics and ready to take on the boss with the added abilities and buffs from the better loot provided. There will be times when luck is simply not on the player’s side, but when the dice hits, it rains power all day long.
3
Morphology Of Justice
Who Needs A Level-Up Anyway?
- You deal +5%/10%/15%/20%/25% damage while your dust is full.
Managing and using the dust mechanic is incredibly important to a successful run, as with each stat upgrade, the player grows in power and the odds of success increase significantly. So it may seem strange to want a perk that rewards the player for not spending the experience points, all for a basic damage buff.
But Morphology of Justice is an incredibly useful perk that provides a significant damage buff at max level, pretty much just by playing the game normally. There are two key parts of the game where it comes into play, firstly in the shrines, where the dust builds up quickly and the player cannot even spend it yet, so the damage buff is a nice bonus to help finish off the elites. The second and most important use case is when taking on the boss, where the players have already used up all their resources and where the dust would normally be useless, it becomes a huge boon with zero drawbacks.
2
Elegy Of Plethora
Rewards To The Rescuer
- You heal 15%/30%/45%/60%/75% health when you resurrect another player
The biggest draw to 33 Immortals is the combination of an exceptional roguelite and a giant lobby of up to 33 players, all working together to defeat the same enemies and conquer the same foes. This co-op aspect combined with the challenging gameplay means that coordination is key, but mistakes do happen and players should expect to die a decent amount before they get the hang of things.

When the boss fights get intense, and bodies begin dropping left and right, health is not in high supply, so having the added sustain is a huge bonus when dealing with the high-damage abilities and attacks of the bosses and their minions. With so many players to resurrect across the map, health is a non-issue thanks to this perk, the perfect utility option to add to melee weapon users who like to get stuck in and use their health as a weapon.

Astute Erudite
Keep The Arrows Flying In
- Your co-op power generates +20%/40%/60%/80%/100% faster
Some of the highest power and damage output comes from the co-op powers that each class can utilize in a fight. A rain of arrows, a hefty shield, or just some extra bones to help heal after a tricky fight, the powers are incredibly useful and as a result, have incredibly long charge times that can see players needing multiple shrines worth of fighting to cast a second time.
With Astute Erudite, the charge rate can be doubled, effectively doubling the damage output, shield potential, and general utility of the weapon chosen. When used in conjunction with the Muddy Apostle Medal or Bloodstained Stole relics, the charge rate is absurd, turning the long wait time into a matter of seconds before the damage is unleashed, and the boss’ health bar is turned to mince meat.
