The Greatsword in Monster Hunter Wilds may be slow, but it hits extremely hard when players execute its attacks correctly, and when equipped with the right build, its users will be able to flow like water and hit like a bolt of lightning.
The following is a High Rank Greatsword build that aims to maximize damage output while playing around MH Wilds’ new Offset Attack mechanic, resulting in a slow but steady playstyle that can keep up with even the fastest of monsters.

Monster Hunter Wilds – Offset Greatsword Build
This build uses a combination of several meta armor pieces that players can often find being used for other weapons like the Long Sword. However, we’ll be tweaking the decorations and armor skills to better fit the Greatsword’s Offset playstyle.
Armor Selection
First, we’ll be using two pieces of the Guardian Fulgur Anjanath armor set to get the Second Wind I skill, which grants us an additional stamina bar segment. The latter is important because of how it interacts with Maximum Might — as long as your main stamina bar remains full, Maximum Might will not deactivate.
Two pieces of the Gore Magala set will gives the Black Eclipse skill, which will infect users with the Frenzy debuff every time they fight a large monsters. This translates to more Affinity for players as long as they can consistently clear Frenzy by attacking an enemy target.
Lastly, Arkvulcan Mail is our choice of chestpiece all thanks to its decoration slots and the baked-in Weakness Exploit 1 skill. This will allow players to achieve the following armor skill levels with the decorations listed above:
- Weakness Exploit 5
- Counterstrike 3
- Maximum Might 3
- Antivirus 3
- Constitution 2
- Agitator 2
- Flinch Free 1
Armor Skills
Apart from reaching 100% critical hit chance under the right conditions, this build will also provide players with a whopping +25 raw attack with Counterstrike 3 with an additional +8 raw attack when Agitator is active. These values are massive for the Greatsword, but players will need to keep Counterstrike active by hitting Offset Attacks or by using Tackle to tank incoming hits.
Weapon Choice
A Rarity 8 Artian Greatsword with Attack infusions and the Sleep Element will be the best choice for this build. Artian weapons in general are considered best-in-slot for every weapon type, but considering how much work is needed to get a perfectly-crafted one, players will need to opt for Rarity 8 Smithy weapons until they reach that point.
For best effect, equip your Palico with a Sleep weapon as well.
In the meantime, we recommend the Immolator Blade
from the Nerscylla tree due to its high base Affinity and decent raw attack value. Once this weapon puts a monster to sleep, use Focus Mode to hit the sleeping monster with the second hit of a True Charged Slash. Doing so will make that TCS hit deal double damage.
Alternatively, you can use Grimslayer Urgeom
from the G. Doshaguma tree. This has the highest base raw attack out of all Smithy Greatswords, but it also has -25% Affinity. You won’t be able to enjoy guaranteed crits with this weapon, but you’ll hit like a truck with every blow.
