Is Kaido Still Alive, Explained

Is Kaido Still Alive, Explained

Summary

  • Characters rarely die in One Piece, including villains defeated by Luffy.
  • Kaido may still be alive after being knocked into a pool of magma by Luffy.
  • Debate rages on in the community, speculating on Kaido’s survival due to his durability.

When it comes to villains in One Piece, rarely do these characters actually seem to die in the canon story. No matter how severe their injuries are or how unlikely their survival may seem, more often than not, almost every villain is shown recovering from their encounter with the Straw Hat Pirates. Although plenty of characters do die in One Piece, especially from Marineford onward, it’s even rarer to see a villain die at the hands of Luffy or the Straw Hats.

Due to this, so far, no character that Luffy has fought in One Piece has died due to injuries from their battle. However, after the defeat of Kaido on Wano, many fans are unsure whether the Captain of the Beast Pirates is still present on the mortal plane. With his status currently unknown, the community has often wondered if Kaido is still alive in One Piece, or did Luffy inadvertently killed one of his antagonists.

Kaido Suffered The Greatest Defeat Out Of Any Antagonist In One Piece

He Sunk Into A Pool Of Magma After Being Knocked Out

Throughout One Piece, Luffy generally stays away from using weaponry and sticking to using punches and kicks, Luffy has never actually killed any of his opponents. Although one could argue that the force Luffy uses on some of the fodder characters in One Piece may be excessive, there has never been a character that Luffy fought that has died as a direct result of fighting with the protagonist of One Piece, at least in the canon series. Despite some opponents seeming like they could have easily died from their fight, like Buggy being launched by Luffy across the sea where he could easily land in the water and drown, they always seem to survive in the luckiest ways.

Only Haki can transcend all! – Kaido

During the Wano Arc, after Luffy awakened his Devil Fruit and accessed Gear 5, the Straw Hat Captain was able to defeat the Emperor of the Seas, Kaido, freeing the country of Wano from his occupation. After Luffy’s final blow, Kaido was launched deep into the earth on Wano, sinking deep into the island’s magma chambers. If this wasn’t enough, the Emperor was also unconscious as he sunk, leaving his status in the story unknown to the audience.

This has sparked a fierce debate in the One Piece community about whether or not Kaido is still alive. On the one hand, sinking in lava is a death sentence for most characters in the world of One Piece. However, on the other hand, Kaido is incredibly durable and is likely able to survive in lava for long periods of time.

However, it is likely, based on the previous trends of One Piece, that Kaido is most likely still alive. Even going beyond the fact that characters and villains rarely die in One Piece, putting a death on Luffy’s hands may be something that Oda isn’t ready to do. Plus, Kaido’s Devil Fruit has yet to reappear, and being such a powerful Devil Fruit, it seems likely that those looking for it would find it quickly after his death.

Although it seems unlikely that Kaido could have survived, there are a few ways that both he and Big Mom may have escaped the magma chambers of the country of Wano. Mainly, after Kaido was knocked underground there was an eruption that could have launched both Emperors to safety. Additionally, Big Mom could have regained consciousness and easily saved both of them with her Devil Fruit.

I survived again… – Kaido

Still, in the end, despite the fact that Kaido is likely alive in the current story of One Piece, his relevance in the series will probably be minimal from here on out. In fact, many fans are hoping that Kaido receives a similar treatment to Arlong, where he is still alive, but largely absent in future arcs. However, fans will have to wait a little while longer until they are given direct confirmation of whether both Kaido and Big Mom are alive in One Piece.
