The Best Unit Partners In Unicorn Overlord

The Best Unit Partners In Unicorn Overlord

Summary

  • Team assembling is key in Unicorn Overlord. The more characters and classes you acquire, the more powerful combinations you’ll be able to construct.
  • Units all have specific weaknesses – the best pairs will cover each other’s shortfalls.
  • Consider pushing forward in the story to unlock more unit types. That way, you can assemble better teams.

Unicorn Overlord is a game with a ton of moving parts. However, if there is one element that stands out above all others it is the team assembling aspect. The ability for you to assemble powerful teams will grow as you obtain more characters, classes, and character slots per unit. Inevitably, you will find yourself with dozens of unique characters and thousands of potential combinations.

Unicorn Overlord: Where To Find Every Divine Shard In Elheim

This guide will help you find all those well hidden Divine Shards in Unicorn Overlord’s nation of elves: Elheim.

This guide is focused primarily on highlighting potent pairs, as there is a great deal of dangerous duos. While some of these pairs are more potent than others, this list isn’t a ranking. These are all strong team combinations that are worth considering when forming your units.

These are just ten great pairs, there are a number of strong pairings that aren’t listed here simply because we can’t justify writing a hundred-entry-long list. Some pairs that were a little on the obvious side were left out (the Hoplite and every class in the game, as an example). We also tried to balance duos that are available early with pairs that only become available in the later parts of the game.

Housecarl And Knight

Unicorn Overlord, The Housecarl with the Knight

The One-Two Punch

If you are early in the game you may not know how important initiative is. This stat will determine turn order, which can be extremely important for creating balanced teams. Initiative is also why the Housecarl will be such a valuable troop, as they have a pretty high initiative. The Knight, on the other hand, has the phenomenal Assault Lance ability, which will provide him with an additional AP whenever he kills a unit using it. You see where this is going, right?

The Housecarl will attack an enemy, lowering their defense in the process, then, the Knight, whose Assault Lance ability you will set to target foes with the lowest HP, will then charge in and land the finishing blow. This pair will take you extremely far during the first third of the game.

8

Hoplite And Radiant Knight

Unicorn Overlord, Hoplite and Radiant Knight

The (Nearly) Impenetrable Wall

This is one of our more obvious pairings, but we feel like it is valuable enough that it needs to be given some attention: the Hoplite will nullify physical attacks, while the Radiant Knight can nullify magical attacks.

This duo can be undermined by warriors (who crush Hoplites) and flying units (who all devastate the mounted Radiant Knights), but it nullifies nearly every other unit type. It makes this duo a fantastic addition to nearly any unit, and it is a pairing that will be relevant all the way to the end of the game.

If you want Radiant Knights sooner rather than later, push through the main story missions, and you will obtain the Radiant Knight as of The Priestess, Abducted quest.

7

Witch And Gladiator

Unicorn Overlord, The Gladiator and the Witch

Not So Nimble Now, Are You?

One of the problems you are going to face often is just how evasive some of the lightweight classes can be. This is extremely frustrating when you are trying to use one of those burly Gladiators. Let the big boy bang, you cowards! These guys are some of your hardest-hitting units, and they can decimate entire rows at a time, but hitting hard isn’t useful when you don’t hit at all. Thankfully, Unicorn Overlord has the True Strike effect. If an attack has the True Strike effect, then it will never miss.

Which of these incredible tactical RPGs should you play?

Naturally, this is where the Witch comes in. Her Focus Sight skill will give an ally the True Strike effect. So, just make a condition of her Focus Sight skill the Gladiator class being present and watch rows of thieves get mowed down in the blink of an eye.

The Witch and Hunter pair well for similar reasons, especially once the Hunter gets the Row Shot at level 20!

6

Fighter And Gryphon Knight

Unicorn Overlord, Gyphon Knight and Fighter

The Arrow-Proof Winged Dealers Of Death

One of the earlier reverse Uno cards in Unicorn Overlord is the Gryphon Knight. These winged warriors are excellent at killing all mounted units. However, there is the serious caveat that the Gryphon Knight is extremely vulnerable to arrows. And that is where our fighters come in. They have the ability to block arrows, making them the perfect pair for their feathered friends.

For the best result, you will want to disable the Fighter’s other PP-using abilities, and maybe consider loading them up with accessories and equipment that pumps up the amount of blue gems they have available. Their job here is to jump in front of arrows; leave the death-dealing to the winged terrors.

This combination works with every flying unit, of course. It is most potent with the Gryphon Master (who has a ranged attack dodge of their own), however, seeing as how you will have the Gryphon Knight and Fighter extremely early in the game, we decided to highlight that particular combination.

5

Swordsman And Cleric

Unicorn Overlord, Swordsman and Clerid

The Power Of Healing

The swordsman is an incredibly powerful warrior, capable dishing our absurd damage and taking multiple turns. Their primary weakness is that they aren’t particularly beefy, so just throw them in with a Hoplite then, right? Well, unfortunately, that really undermines their ability to perform, as they are at their best when they are parrying attacks, which grants them AP, and helps them dish out hefty damage.

Naturally, the Cleric pairs well with every vulnerable unit, but since they have no offensive ability, it makes any unit they are a part of less capable of taking out enemy units quickly. But if you have a Swordsman or two accompanying them, then you won’t be hurting for offensive potential.

Additionally, Radiant Knights will make the Swordsman more viable when fighting Wizards and Mages.

4

Hoplite And Dark Knight

Unicorn Overlord, Hoplite and Dark Knight

Living On The Edge

Yes, we know: Hoplite pairs are pretty route one, right? We already covered that in the opening blurb. However, there is a reason why we felt like this particular pairing needed to be highlighted. By thoughtfully tweaking the Hoplite’s tactics, you can set them to only defend the Dark Knight once they get below 25% of their health.

Unicorn Overlord is a game that largely takes place on the battlefield. We’ll show you how to emerge victorious!

Why are we intentionally keeping the Dark Knight on life support? Well, because their Vengeful Axe’s power increases proportionally to the amount of damage they take. It is still a risky approach, but it is one that can pay off in a big way.

3

Gryphon Master And Werewolf

Unicorn Overlord, Gryphon Master and Werewolf

Cleaning Your Plate

Gryphone Knights and Gryphon Masters are great at dealing damage to large swathes of enemies. While they eradicate mounted units with ease, they tend to deal good, but not great, damage to everyone else. Which means you’ll have a bunch of enemy units who will be left alive, if not well.

But that is where the Werewolf comes in. This unit is specifically built around finishing enemies off. Their abilities are purpose built around it. So, why not let the Gryphon Master set ’em up, and then have the Werewolf knock em down?

We are specifically referencing the Gryphon Master here has by the time you get to Bestorias, and can recruit a werewolf, you will surely have unlocked the ability to promote your units. However, if you somehow manage to get a werewolf before you have a Gryphon Master, the Gryphon Knight will do well enough.

2

Dark Marquess And Shaman

Unicorn Overlord, The Shaman and Dark Marquess

An Unholy Pair

This is a pair formed in the pits of hell. The Shamen is already a nightmare to deal with, as they are constantly lowering your attack power, and turning powerful characters into feather-fisted jokes.

However, pairing them with the fearsome Dark Marquess truly adds injury to insult, as their attacks become dramatically more powerful when they hit foes who have already been afflicted with a debuff. Naturally, any unit that has the Refresh ability (primarily Clerics) will undermine this pairing greatly, but everyone else will be devastated by these two.

1

Swordsman And Wereowl

Did Someone Request Unlimited Parries?

Fighting against the Swordsman can be a waking nightmare. Hit them with a physical attack and they will parry it – nullifying any damage and providing them with an additional Action Point. So then, imagine how hard life is when they have a Wereowl feeding them even more PP to fuel their parries.

Depending on what accessories and equipment you have on your swordsman, we are talking about them being able to take five or six turns. Easily. When fueled by the Wereowl they are simply devestating for anything but the most heavily armored physical units to deal with.
