While Manor Lords goes medieval and Terra Invicta takes things to space, Old World is the strategy game in Hooded Horse’s excellent lineup that Civilization fans will really gravitate to. One of the first projects to be published by the label, Old World is still going strong, and it’s just dropped a new DLC that is full of disasters. Don’t fret, I’m not talking about game-breaking bugs or questionable mechanics, I’m talking about the ones cooked up by Mother Nature – or the gods, in this case. So, get ready for your hexes to be battered by tsunamis, wildfires, sandstorms, and more in the Wrath of Gods DLC, which also adds a new faction, dozens of new events, and much more.
Civilization 7 is of course the biggest new strategy game in town right now, but that’s not put Old World off from launching its new expansion. Wrath of Gods delivers a fresh narrative scenario that “tells the story of a nation’s founding under the watchful eyes of four pagan gods.” The nation in question is Aksum, a former kingdom from the east of Africa, which arrives in Old World with its own dynasties, two new units, unique events, and more. Developer Mohawk Games assures that this dramatic, standalone story doesn’t impact the base game’s narrative, but what it does do is introduce some serious shake-ups to gameplay.
Nine new natural disasters and environmental calamities, brought upon you by displeasing the gods, can impact your game. A massive volcanic eruption may destroy everything in the path of its torrents of lava, or a plague may sweep across your lands and infect its people. The map itself can even be manipulated by these events – coastlines can be eroded, mountain ranges can crumble to become passable, and more. Avoiding the dangers of these calamities is one thing, but the real skill will be in how you then take advantage of the changed world around you.
The DLC adds over 200 new gameplay events, which are triggered by these dynamic natural events, “offering choices that test your leadership, compassion, and opportunism.” You’ll also get access to 26 projects, eight traits, and new missions.
The Wrath of Gods DLC for Old World is available right now. Until Monday, March 17, you can get 10% off the DLC, making it just $8.99 / £8.09.
