Ever since the first Monster Hunter game, players have been able to attack a monster’s tail (most of them) and work their way to eventually slicing it off, allowing them to carve the severed part for special crafting materials. This remains a feature to this day, as hunters can indeed cut off the tails of certain monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds.
How to Cut Monster Tails in Monster Hunter Wilds
In order to cut off tails of a monster in Monster Hunter Wilds (sever one of its parts) , you’re going to need to use a weapon with a sharp edge, like a Sword and Shield, Great Sword, Dual Blades, etc.
While you can technically sever a monster’s parts with a Bowgun, you’re going to have to use Slicing Ammo; however, even if you aim right at the monster’s tip of the tail, using a gun just doesn’t work as well, –plus, using a cutting weapon doesn’t require ammo!

In previous Monster Hunter games, players could use all types of different weapons on a monster’s tail, but as long as it took at least one hit from a sharp weapon, the part would come off. However, that’s not the case with more modern Monster Hunter entries, including Wilds. You have to keep dishing out sharp weapon-type damage to the monster’s parts for it to eventually come off.
Why Should You Cut Tails off in Monster Hunter Wilds?

The more parts of a monster that you can wound or sever during a hunt will give you and your hunting squad more materials at the end of the day. There are also some unique pieces of armor and weapons that will require you to hunt down a specific material that can only be obtained by severing a monster part. If you find yourself in a position where you’re using a primary and secondary weapon that’s not meant for slicing tails, you might need to just upgrade one and keep it as an optional weapon specifically for severing monster parts. Otherwise, you might just need to team up with a buddy that can cut the tail off for you.

Once the monster’s part has been severed, just make sure the monster isn’t actively battling with you before carving for resources. If you’re having trouble getting a specific part off, try to use methods to get the monster to stay still. You can mount it to attack its weak points; you can use Shock and Pitfall Traps; you can use explosive bombs; you can paralyze the monster or use Flash Bombs –there’s a wide variety of ways to keep monsters at bay. If you deal too much damage before slicing the tail, the quest will end, and the monster will fall, which means you’ll have to repeat the process.
Monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds With Tails (or Parts) to Sever
As of writing, we’ve only encountered 24 large monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds. A majority of these creatures do not have parts that can be severed or tails that can be cut off.

There’s also a small chance of getting a monster’s tail through Quest and Capture rewards, but your chance is much higher if you physically slice the tail (or tentacles) off.
How to Check A Monster’s Weak Points and Severable Parts in Monster Hunter Wilds
If you hit the pause menu in Monster Hunter Wilds, tab over to the Info section, and then you’ll see the Monster Field Guide. You can see the list of Large Monsters that you’ve encountered so far.
Each monster has five pages of additional info to peruse. If you head over to the second page, you can see a detailed image of the monster and its breakable parts, weak points, and severable parts.
