How to Mod Avowed

Mods are a gamer’s go-to answer when something doesn’t suit their tastes. Avowed already has a number of user-made content that alter the way the game works, and players can expect more to come once the community settles down.

If you want to increase (or decrease) Avowed’s difficulty or change a few things to improve your experience, then you can try using some mods made by other players. The mod installation process should be familiar if you have experience modding other games, but if this is your first time trying something like this out, here’s a quick guide showing you how things are done.

As of writing, Avowed does not have any official modding support, which means users won’t be able to create content like equipment, companions, or maps. However, creators in the Avowed Nexusmods page have already started publishing QoL mods that improve various parts of the game. Thankfully, they’re pretty simple to install, and the same instructions work for both the Steam and Game Pass versions of Avowed.

  1. Download any mod.
  2. Extract mod files to your installation folder (Avowed/Alabama/Paks/~mods)
  3. Run the game.

As far as simple QoL mods go, all you have to do is extract their contents into the ~mods folder in your Avowed installation directory (if this folder doesn’t exist, create it). You can go directly to your game installation folder by doing the following:

Steam Installation Directory

  1. Right-click Avowed in your Steam Library.
  2. Click “Browse Local Files.”

Xbox Game Pass

  1. Right-click Avowed in your Game Pass library.
  2. Select “Manage.”
  3. Click “Browse” on the upper portion of the window that appears.

If Avowed does get mod support, all other .pak mods should be installed this way too, as is usually the case with modern Unreal Engine games.

Installing Engine Tweaks

Engine tweaks could be your answer if you’re struggling to get a good frame rate for Avowed. Tweaked files normally alter additional settings that are otherwise unavailable through the in-game options menu. Installing these are as simple as the mods above, but you’ll need to place the files in a different folder:

  • Steam: AppData/Local/Alabama/Saved/Config/Windows
  • Game Pass: AppData/Local/Alabama/Saved/Config/WinGDK

Replace the Engine.ini there with the one you downloaded, but don’t forget to make a backup in case things go wrong. Also, once you’ve replaced the .ini file, turn on the Read-Only setting by right-clicking the file, clicking on Properties, then checking the Read-Only box near the bottom of the window. This will prevent the game from overwriting the custom Engine settings.

You can also customize these modded Engine.ini files to your liking by opening them with Notepad or any text file reader, though they’ll likely be difficult to edit unless you know how Unreal Engine 5 works.
