Summary

  • Players can’t disable Canon Mode in Assassin’s Creed Shadows once activated.
  • Canon Mode is ideal for fans wanting to stick to the canonical story without worrying about dialogue choices.
  • Players have to choose between having Canon Mode on or off at the beginning of the game.

Ubisoft has confirmed that the Canon Mode in Assassin’s Creed Shadows can not be turned off once it’s activated. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is taking Ubisoft’s long-running stealth action series to feudal Japan, answering years of fan demand. The new game brings all kinds of interesting new features to the table, with one of the more intriguing additions being Canon Mode.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Canon Mode lets players turn off dialogue options so they can experience the canon story. This is great for Assassin’s Creed fans that want to know exactly how everything is supposed to happen and don’t care to choose their own dialogue, potentially influencing a character’s personality in the process. This sounds like a great optional feature on paper, though it comes with a catch that fans should take into account before they decide to select it.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Getting a Prequel

Assassin’s Creed Shadows gets a prequel story lined up more than a month before its release, and it has a mysterious cover star.

Ubisoft has clarified that the Assassin’s Creed Shadows Canon Mode can not be changed once activated. This means choosing Canon Mode locks players into it for the duration of the game, with no way to turn it off without starting a new save. The option has no impact on game difficulty and players can still swap between Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ two playable characters while out in the open world.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Canon Mode Can’t Be Turned Off Once Activated

It makes sense not to let players turn Canon Mode on later in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, as it’s possible that player choice will potentially change things enough that the game will no longer be able to stick with the canon story. It’s unclear why it can’t be turned off, though. Presumably, players would be able to choose all the canon dialogue options anyway, so one has to wonder why turning Canon Mode off mid-game isn’t an option. Regardless, choosing Canon Mode or not is something that players have to decide right at the beginning, with the video shared by Ubisoft showing that the decision is made while AC Shadows protagonist Yasuke is having a conversation with Oda Nobunaga.

When Assassin’s Creed Shadows launches on March 20, it will be interesting to see how many players decide to go with Canon Mode, and how many decide to choose their own dialogue options. If the feature proves popular enough, one has to imagine that Ubisoft will consider bringing it back for future installments.
