The Browns join Paddington in his adventure as the mother, Mary, sees this as one last opportunity for the family to be together before the kids all go their separate ways in life. That’s the general premise, but Paddington in Peru is anything but simple as it takes a page from the Uncharted series of adventuring. “Embrace The Risk.”

Madison

Madison is a new character in Paddington in Peru. Marvel fans will recognize this as Hayley Atwell, aka Agent Peggy Carter from all of the Captain America-based adventures. She is Henry’s new boss at the insurance agency, and her motto in life is “Embrace the risk.” Henry is a character more in line with playing it safe, but he does break out of his shell as Madison’s motto quickly becomes the movie’s. That’s how he agrees to follow Paddington to Peru in the first place.

“Gotta Smell Good In The Jungle.”

Jonathan

Jonathan has advanced to sort of a gross character in Paddington in Peru in his teenage years. He spends all of his time gaming and inventing holes up in his room. Before packing for Peru, he sprays dirty laundry with what looks to be Axe Body Spray. On the ship, his sister Judy asks what that weird smell is, and it’s Jonathan once again spraying himself up to get jungle-ready. With so much time spent on the body spray, it’s weird that it never helps or hinders The Browns in a comedic way.

“Everyone Is Thinking, How Long Until We Eat Each Other.”

Judy

The Browns have their first big upset after getting to Peru and finding out Aunt Lucy is missing. Hunter and Gina fall off the ship, leading Paddington and the Browns to fend for themselves without their Peruvian guides.

Things don’t go well, though, and the ship crashes with everyone still intact, at least. Immediately when they get to dry land, Judy has a data entry that asks about cannibalism. It’s a dark joke for a kids’ movie, which makes it funnier.

“The Lord Moves In Suspicious Ways.”

The Reverend Mother

Mrs. Bird stays behind to help the Sisters take care of the bears at the convent. Mrs. Bird soon discovers that The Reverend Mother is hiding something. After some investigations, Mrs. Bird discovers mysterious wires leading behind a musical organ. The Reverend Mother tries to brush this room off as nothing to worry about with this line instead of the more common “The Lord moves in mysterious ways.” That’s not enough to ease Mrs. Bird as she now thinks The Reverend Mother is some sort of spy. They have some great banter with each other as the others are having their jungle adventures.

“What?”

The Cabots

Out of context, a line like “What?” may not sound funny, but it’s one of the better scenes in Paddington in Peru. Hunter is delusional throughout the entire movie, seeing ghosts of the past Cabot family. It comes to a boiling point when Hunter and Paddington are trying to enjoy a nice fire, but the voices are getting too intense. Hunter starts talking about eating the bear instead of getting the El Dorado treasure, to which all five Cabot ghosts say, “What?” It’s an acknowledgment to the audience that this joke is going too far in a kids’ movie, just like the cannibal joke from Judy.

“It’s Called A Hard Stare.”

There are quite a few callbacks to the film series in Paddington in Peru besides Paddington’s love of marmalade. For example, he uses the Hard Stare to make Hunter come to his senses after he thinks about sacrificing Gina just to get treasure.

The Hard Stare always works, and Hunter manages to best his cousin, Clarissa, who was posing as The Reverend Mother this whole time. Villains are rarely painted in black and white in these types of movies, so it’s nice to see Hunter finally be a dad again to his daughter.

“Please Look After This Bear.”

There are some truly heartbreaking and heartwarming scenes in this movie, but the hardest tearjerker has to be when Mary is reminiscing about Paddington in El Dorado. She’s worried her adopted little bear is going to stay with his real family, the Peruvian bears. That’s when she finds the tag in Paddington’s pocket that reads, “Please look after this bear.” If this doesn’t start the waterworks, then nothing will in Paddington in Peru, but thankfully, the ending is happy as Paddington asks to stay with Mary and The Browns once again.

The Reverend Mother

Hunter gets a redemption arc in Paddington in Peru, but his cousin Clarissa does not. Instead of going to jail, she is forced to become a nun for real. Instead of relocating to somewhere else sunny, she is taken to somewhere snowy to take care of polar bears in a retirement home. Her screaming of “No!” is epic, and gets close to Darth Vader screaming the same line in Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith. That will teach Clarissa to mess with Peruvian bears again.
