Summary

  • Sakamoto Days anime adaptation has divided fans, leading to discussions about a potential remake.
  • Many fans are dissatisfied with the anime adaptation, citing issues with action scenes and missing comic scenes.
  • While the series has high ratings on Netflix, manga sales have not followed the same trend, sparking concerns about commercial success.

Sakamoto Days anime adaptation has divided fans, and some are now even wondering if at least the first season should get a remake. Despite high ratings on Netflix, many Sakamoto Days fans are not pleased with the anime adaptation. At first, they were mostly complaining about the action scenes, which are indeed stiffer than usual for such a hyped production, but as the animation progressed, a lot of them also started complaining that many comic scenes (or even full episodes) were cut from the adaptation, so the series isn’t appealing to a good portion of manga fans that enjoy the action neither to manga fans that enjoy the humor.

Now, a few fans are even discussing on Reddit if this season should be remade like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. For those unfamiliar with Fullmetal Alchemist, the first anime (2003), while successful, altered many events from the original story. Six years later, FMA Brotherhood, a faithful adaptation of the manga, was released.

Understanding the Appeal of Sakamoto Days

Sakamoto Days follows the life of a retired assassin, but what exactly makes this anime so entertaining?

“It Deserves A Remake, But So Do Many Other Series”

One unsatisfied fan started out by questioning whether or not the anime should have a remake:

This is gonna be a stupid ******* question, but in your opinion does season 1 of the anime deserve to be remade like Brotherhood?

Just a few users replied, and all of them said “Yes”. However, some were more grounded and pointed out that many other manga deserve a remake. For example, another user commented:

Yes. But so does Tokyo Ghoul. And Berserk. And Blue Lock. And etc etc etc.

Problem is we all want Sakadays to have JJK level animation and Sunghoo Park fight choreography but it’s more than likely never gunna happen. Just gunna have to be happy with what we got and enjoy the manga in the meantime.

We might get INCREDIBLY lucky and have TMS pawn off the project for season 2 but even that I don’t see happening. Best case scenario that’s realistic is that we get a more equipped action director from TMS and a better schedule for the animators.

A third user pointed out that a remake is probably not a viable option for now:

For the near future best case scenario is the animation is cleaned up a bit for the blu-ray release and cour 2 onwards looks better. Or at least a future season 2.

While these are just fans politely discussing things on the internet, as they should, it shows how disappointed some are with the anime – many fans are also worried about the production conditions.

Meanwhile, most anime-only fans seem to be enjoying the series – some of them started reading the manga and have claimed they started to understand the complaints. Probably no other recent Shonen Jump manga adaptation has left its fan base so divided as this one.

Sakamoto Days Netflix Ratings Vs. Manga Sales

Since its premiere, Sakamoto Days has been ranked as one of the most watched shows on Netflix Japan weekly charts – the series is also performing well on the global weekly charts. Some claim it is already the most successful anime in terms of viewership on Netflix.

However, manga sales don’t seem to be following the same trend. While sales aren’t exactly bad, they certainly aren’t as good as expected, at least for now. It remains to be seen if this large viewership will be converted into commercial sales, as Season 2 could bring a few surprises for disappointed fans.

Sakamoto Days is currently streaming on Netflix, subbed and dubbed in many languages.
