Marvel Rivals Leaked Characters Might Just Be Cut Content

Summary

  • Marvel Rivals devs deny “trolling” dataminers with fake leaks.
  • This comes after dataminers found evidence in the game files for characters such as Professor X and Gambit.
  • The devs say that a character appearing in the game files doesn’t necessarily mean they are joining the roster.

Marvel Rivals dataminers have been hard at work since launch, leaking characters who they say they have found evidence for in the game’s files. However, fairly recently, there has been a debate in the community, as some of these dataminers are now convinced that NetEase is trolling them with fake “evidence” in the files.

IGN put this question to Marvel Rivals producer Weicong Wu and Marvel Games executive Danny Koo. Their response is a definitive no, they are not trying to troll the community. In fact, as Koo puts it: “We would rather spend our time developing the actual game.”

Marvel Rivals Team Responds To Rumours Of Datamine Trolling

That doesn’t mean all the leaked heroes will join the roster, though

First things first, the team isn’t too pleased with dataminers. “We don’t recommend anybody […] make adjustments to the files,” says Wu.

He then suggests that a lot of the datamined content could come from characters who were considered, but never made it onto the roster. “For each character’s design actually we come through a very complicated process and we make a lot of concepts, trials, prototypes, development, et cetera. So there could be some information left in the code, and it might mean that we have tried those directions and they may appear or may not appear in our future plans.”

Koo then argues that this doesn’t give dataminers a good idea of what is being planned for the future: “It was like there’s someone doing scratch paperwork and then just left a notebook there, and someone [a dataminer] decided to open it with no context.”

So far, “leaked” characters who are yet to be confirmed include Professor X, Colossus, Gambit, Rogue, and Jubilee. Of course, if what is said in this interview is true, then they might not be joining the roster at all, and were just considered at some stage in development. We’ll just have to wait and see.
