Civilization 7 hasn’t quite been the 4X game many of us hoped for so far. Huge changes to progression and issues with the user interface have marred the launch, but developer Firaxis is already hard at work bringing the historical strategy game back with plenty of patches. If you’d rather step away from Civ 7 while these changes come into effect, however, there’s another, somewhat forgotten 4X experience getting some love. Humankind had a mixed launch, but the latest update offers up some big improvements.
Humankind might look like your traditional 4X game on the surface, but it has one smart trick up its sleeve. Instead of picking a civilization and sticking with it, you can meld different societies together to create the perfect utopia. From here you need to build out cities, fight in wars, and manage the ever-growing resources your people need to survive. You also just so happen to have 60 cultures from the ancient era to modern age you can combine to make sure you succeed.
If you managed to grab Humankind for free during a recent giveaway, already own it, or just fancy a change of pace from Civ 7, developer Amplitude Studios just made some big changes to the game. The new Achilles update takes aim at some of the community’s biggest frustrations, mainly surrounding “War Support, War Score, and Surrender.”
Before the new patch, War Support was considered akin to “War HP,” but Amplitude has changed it to function more like stamina. This means both sides can continue fighting a conflict even if their War Support reaches zero, instead of it ending. Now, you’ll have to account for the social consequences of continuing to fight, which will influence your option to surrender.

Speaking of, all surrender proposals can now be refused, even if your War Support is at zero. If you do turn down the option to give up, however, you’ll be hit with penalties unless your War Support increases. Food, industry, money, and more will all suffer, but it’s now up to you to decide when to give up, or how you’ll claw society back from the brink.
“With these changes, you can keep fighting even if your enemy or your own people are ready to give up. You may have to deal with a few rebels if you push things too far, though,” Amplitude writes in the patch notes.
