Squid Game is set to return for its final season this year. However, the recent reports about the hit Netflix show might disappoint fans.

Squid Game is one of the most successful shows on Netflix. When the streaming giant dropped its first season in 2021, it dominated the platform worldwide for several weeks. Season 2 was as successful, but many felt it ended abruptly because it had fewer episodes than the first season. Many expected the second season to have the same number of episodes as Season 1, but it was two episodes shorter. A new report claimed a similar case could happen in Squid Game Season 3.

Squid Game 3 Fan Theory Suggests A Tragic Transformation For Gi-hun

According to fan theory, Squid Game Season 3 could feature one of its lead characters in a new light.

An online forum, Instiz, stirred the Squid Game world after it revealed the alleged number of episodes in the upcoming season. In the English translation obtained by Koreaboo, Squid Game Season 3 will reportedly only have six episodes, which is fewer than Season 2. “Six episodes is way too short,” one reportedly wrote. Another shared the same sentiment writing, “Six episodes is too short.” Meanwhile, a different user asked, “I’m curious… Will Seong Gi Hun survive until the end of the six episodes, or will there be a new winner?” The rumored number of episodes became a hot topic online, with many expressing their disappointment for the second time. When Squid Game Season 2 was released with seven episodes, viewers were not happy because they wanted to see more, but the series ended abruptly after episode 7 when the Front Man shot Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) childhood best friend Park Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) after the former started a rebellion, which only led to the deaths of several players and masked guards.

Since Squid Game Season 3 will be the show’s final run, many hope they will see more in the finale. So, it’s understandable why several fans are not happy with the rumored number of episodes. The report also pointed out that Squid Game Season 2 and Season 3, which had been filmed simultaneously had a combined budget of 100 billion KRW ($687 million). Since it’s a big-budget production, expectations are high with regard to cinematography, visuals, sounds and number of episodes. A fewer number of episodes will surely be a source of disappointment to fans who already felt that the seven episodes in the second season weren’t enough only to have six in Season 3.

It’s still not officially confirmed whether Squid Game Season 3 will only have six episodes. However, it’s also not unlikely because director Hwang Dong-hyuk admitted that he worked on the scripts for Seasons 2 and 3 “at the same time” and he decided to cut the second season after episode 7 because the story will continue in Season 3 and the said episode was “a big turning point or an inflection point” in the plot. Considering his statement, it’s possible that the story will be too lengthy if condensed in Season 2. However, when they are divided into two seasons, they will do so, but each season will have fewer episodes. Also, Dong-hyuk is probably already satisfied with how he wrote the series and didn’t feel the need to stretch the story to satisfy the fans’ need for more episodes. Regardless, fans will soon find out if this rumor is true or not.

Squid Game Season 3 will be released on Netflix on June 27, 2023.
