The Office Fight

Marvin Vs Raven

Raven in Love Hurts

It doesn’t take long for things to unravel for Marvin, as he has an assassin waiting for him in his real estate office. Raven is an overpowering presence in the office who towers over Marvin physically by at least a foot if not two. His weapon of choice is knives, although he does have some feather-tipped darts too, and a straight-up gauntlet from Assassin’s Creed. Marvin begins the fight at a disadvantage as he’s stuck to his desk via a dagger stricken through his hand.

Even though he’s a bit rusty from being an assassin himself, Marvin can fight Raven off using office supplies like a staple remover and his laptop. The comedy comes into play when Ashley, Marvin’s assistant, is weirded out by the strange noises coming from his office. When she comes to check on him, Marvin claims it’s a rough yoga routine. Eventually, Marvin gets the upper hand, incapacitates Raven, and quickly leaves the office after a meeting with his boss, Cliff.

A Home Invasion

Marvin Vs King And Otis

Marvin facing intruders in Love Hurts

The best fight in the movie is the second one, which commences when Marvin gets home. Waiting for him there are two more assassins, King and Otis, who shove Marvin around wanting answers about Rose. When he’s had enough, Marvin kicks into high gear again, flipping around like Yoda in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. Appropriately, King and Otis throw Marvin around like a muppet, breaking bar stools, his crock pot, paintings, and everything in between.

Marvin rarely gets the upper hand in this fight. He even gets literally fridged at one point, but narrowly escapes through the backyard. What makes Marvin a good fighter isn’t his actual skills. It’s his ability to take a punch and get back up again, and Ke Huy Quan sells it as an actor, although there were probably a few stunt doubles on set as well.

A Complicated Housing Market

Marvin And Raven Vs King And Otis

People dodging gunfire in Love Hurts

The next fight also happens in a home, but this one was being sold to a couple that Marvin is courting. Just when he thinks he’s going to close the deal on the house, Ashley arrives with the paperwork, but Raven tags along. As it looks like the two are about to fight, the windows get riddled with bullets as King and Otis come to pay them both a visit. Their boss, Renny, orders them to take out Raven along with Marvin because Raven creeps him out.

Suddenly, enemies become allies as the two face off against King and Otis. King and Marvin go to town as Raven throws darts and knives at Otis. At one point, Marvin ducks out to check on the married couple and lets the other three duke it out. Thanks to Ashley stepping in, she makes sure Marvin doesn’t finish Raven off after the team-up has ended. It’s one of the weirder relationships in the movie, and that’s saying something. As a side note, at one point, Drew Scott, the Property Brother, tries to jump in and help Marvin, but he gets killed quickly in a funny yet upsetting way.

The Video Store

Marvin And Rose Vs Knuckles’ Goons

Rose in Love Hurts

The only thing that maes Love Hurts feel like it takes place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is the video store/arcade that Knuckles runs as a front. It’s a pretty nice setup, and it’s where the climax of the movie takes place. Rose is about to get shot when Marvin comes to mop up Knuckles’ goons. Rose breaks free as well and starts tazing flunkies left and right.

The only true kill she gets is a shotgun blast to Renny’s chest, who started this whole mess with a double cross. Marvin is in full force in this fight as he is no longer holding back. He’s the assassin who seemingly died long ago, and he can throw punches, shoot bullets, and stab fools like the best of them. It’s a bit chaotic and not as well choreographed or funny as the two housing scenes, but the action is still well worth the admission price.

Brothers Come Face To Face

Marvin Vs Knuckles

Knuckles in Love Hurts

After the goons are taken care of, Marvin makes his way to the back of the video store to confront Knuckles. He reveals to the audience that Marvin has never been able to beat him. He also reveals to Marvin that he killed Cliff and even stole his cowboy hat. That was a big mistake, as it fueled Marvin to fight back even harder.

Even when Knuckles brings a bat into play, Marvin is mostly unfazed and can break it with a clean punch. While the fight does have some good exchanges of blows, it’s not as fun as the rest of the movie as there isn’t much comedy. That’s kind of the point though, as the fight was largely fought to showcase just how dangerous of a man Marvin was/still is. Beating his brother, Marvin can walk away with Rose while the Russian mobsters sort out the chaos.
