Nintendo has confirmed its commitment to researching and developing mobile games, leveraging the widespread popularity of smartphones to expand the reach of its IPs to a broader audience. This was revealed by Nintendo’s President, Shuntaro Furukawa himself, during a recent investor Q&A session.

Nintendo’s President confirms their ongoing plans with mobile games

Nintendo, the renowned video game company began its console journey back in the 70s with the Color TV-Game and has since been loved by fans worldwide. The company is widely known for franchises like Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, and more, that has contributed a lot to everyone’s childhood.

They entered the mobile market with Miitomo and currently operating three mobile titles, Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Mario Kart Tour. They previously had Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, which unfortunately ended service on November 29, 2024, and was replaced by the offline version, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete.

And it seems they aren’t stopping anytime soon, as company President, Mr. Shuntaro Furukawa recently addressed their approach towards the mobile market during an Investor Q&A. He assured by saying, “We cannot provide details regarding future app developments, but we are continuing to develop new game apps.

As a fan of Nintendo and many of its games, this news is really exciting to me. It’s especially great for people like me who can’t afford a Nintendo console yet but still want to experience their games. Additionally, they also launched Nintendo Music on October 31, 2024, featuring soundtracks from various Nintendo titles.

Mr. Furukawa had been vocal about Nintendo’s mobile app downloads along with other insights

Mr. Furukawa emphasized the importance of mobile games in reaching a wider audience, which is not possible with game consoles. He explained, “We have deployed mobile apps in many regions around the world, including countries and regions that cannot be reached by the game console business.” With their approach, more people can engage with Nintendo’s beloved IPs and characters.

He also revealed that Nintendo’s mobile games have surpassed 900 million downloads, which is a remarkable milestone. With the growing popularity and influence of mobile gaming, they aim to capitalize on it. He stated, “We have been considering various things about what can be done with smartphones, and we will continue to do so in the future.”

Even with the highly anticipated upcoming launch of Switch 2, Mr. Furukawa emphasized the importance of expanding consumers beyond consoles. He added, “We believe that smartphones will play a very large role in this, so we will continue to research and work on this.
