The Zelda fan artist was complimented by others for their crafting skills and also took time to answer a few questions about how the Hylian Shield replica was made.

An indispensable part of Link’s kit, the Hylian Shield is often paired with the iconic Master Sword. It is a magical, reflective heater shield that can protect its wielder from small projectiles and parry close-range attacks if timed correctly. Unlike other wooden shields that Link can use in most Legend of Zelda games, the Hylian Shield is made of steel, which makes it impervious to fire. The Hylian Shield is also lightweight enough for Link to nimbly wield with one arm. In Tears of the Kingdom, Link can Fuse different items onto the Hylian Shield, such as a Zonai Beam Emitter or an explosive Rocket for added damage and mobility.

Nintendo Shuts Down Live-Action Zelda Fan Film

An intriguing live-action Legend of Zelda fan project is being shut down by Nintendo less than a week after its crowdfunding efforts began.

While the Hylian Shield is usually metallic, one Zelda fan gave Link’s shield a different appearance. A Reddit user named JasperHams posted their prop replica of the Hylian Shield on the r/Zelda subreddit. Using materials like cast polyethylene resin, JasperHams made their Hylian Shield take on the appearance of a wooden shield with a steel border. The front of the shield bore the crest of Hyrule, with the Triforce’s image on the top. The Hylian Shield was also given a few scratches to give it the appearance of battle damage, including a chip in the middle. On the backside, the Hylian Shield has a strap and a handle grip, similar to how Link wields the Hylian Shield in Tears of the Kingdom. The Hylian Shield was paired with a replica of the Master Sword in its sheath, similar to the logo on the cover of Ocarina of Time.

Although some Zelda fan artists have made different versions of the Hylian Shield using materials like stained glass, JasperHams’ Hylian Shield was made to appear lightweight enough to use in combat. Although the core of the Hylian Shield is usually a steel plate, JasperHams stated the hardwood appearance would still make it effective against flaming arrows. Other Zelda fans complimented JasperHams for their attention to detail.

When combined with the Master Sword, the Hylian Shield allows Link to be one of the best melee combatants in Nintendo’s history. It remains to be seen when the iconic Hylian Shield will return to the Legend of Zelda franchise.
