Shinji Aoba is the culprit responsible for the Kyoto Animation Arson, now 46 years old. His crime was so huge that he was sentenced to the death penalty.

However, this was never finalized, as he and his lawyers had appealed this sentence. It has been revealed now though that this appeal was withdrawn, as per an interview with the Osaka High Court.

This means that, now, it’s more than likely this capital punishment will be finalized, as per the Japanese justice system, unless something else comes up. His initial death penalty punishment was given quite recently, just last year, in late January 2024. For now, Shinji Aoba awaits his fate in jail.

36 People Died and Many More Injured

The event that led to Shinji Aoba’s imprisonment is known as the Kyoto Animation Arson Attack. This event took place a few years ago, on 18 July 2019, which is about 6 years ago now.

This massacre was of such a scale that 36 people lost their lives, and 34 individuals were heavily injured, including the culprit himself, who sustained life-threatening injuries from his own actions. He did get treated, however, so he could go to the court of law and have his fate decided there.

Shinji, on that day, caused a massive fire by dousing the building with gasoline, and then setting everything on fire.

His reasoning, from what he claims, is plagiarism from the studio. But this is baseless, as none of the studio’s work copied Aoba’s novels.

Kyoto Studio’s Many Animated Works

K-On! Is One Of Their Biggest Work

Kyoto Animation Studio has many known works that they animated, some before and some even after the tragedy. Some of their biggest works include K-On!, Violet Evergarden, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Free!, and Clannad. These are just a few, and the studio will continue and go on to produce more fascinating works in the future, as it has done for the last few years.
