Wolverine is an often underappreciated duelist in Marvel Rivals. While perhaps not the most versatile, his kit is extremely effective when played correctly and can often catch people completely by surprise. He’s great at crowd control, and picking off backline strategists and duelists.

It may not be the Danger Room, but Marvel Rivals’s Practice Mode is pretty cool!

But, this doesn’t mean there’s no way to turn the tides of battle when Wolverine is on the field. There are a decent number of weaknesses Wolverine has, being a melee-based duelist, all of which are easily exploitable if you know what you’re doing. Here are some of the best ways to counter Wolverine in Marvel Rivals.

How To Counter Wolverine

The best thing you can do to counter Wolverine is take advantage of his proximity.

Obviously, playing a sniper hero against Wolverine is not going to prove useful, especially if you’re continuously getting dived by him in the backline.

The other thing you’ll want to consider is how to get away from Wolverine if necessary. Heroes with great mobility and escape tactics can render Wolverine practically useless.

Most of the time, Wolverine’s goal is to get backline picks, so if you can negate that tactic simply by escaping or putting space between yourself and him, his main advantage will be gone.

In terms of playstyle, playing on high ground or up in the air is also immensely helpful against Wolverine.

Wolverine almost always has to take the long way up to high ground unless he’s got his Feral Leap off cooldown. And even then, burning that ability to get to high ground is not always the best use of that skill.

Play at a distance and be ready to escape in order to deal with Wolverine properly. Then, from a medium-range distance, you can take shots or attacks at him while his core melee abilities are useless to him.

How To Counter Wolverine As A Strategist

As a strategist, you’re a prime target for Wolverine, particularly in the backline. That’s why you’ll want to prioritize heroes that have escape abilities and counterattacks.

The Invisible Woman’s Force Physics is great for creating space between yourself and Wolverine so that he can’t follow up a dive with additional melee attacks.

Plus, put enough space between yourself and him, and you can go invisible, thus escaping completely.

Luna Snow’s Ice Arts ability and Absolute Zero are also good against Wolverine. Even if you miss your shots with either of these skills, you’ll begin to heal from any initial damage Wolverine did to you.

This will, hopefully, give you enough time to escape or put space in between the two of you. If you hit your Absolute Zero shot, this also gives your team the ability to follow up and quickly send Wolverine back to spawn.

Rocket Raccoon also has good escape abilities in the form of his Jetpack Dash, Wild Crawl, and Flying Ace passive. If Wolverine dives you, use these abilities to escape from him. From above, you can even take follow-up shots at him while you’re up in the air.

How To Counter Wolverine As A Vanguard

When playing as a vanguard, you’ll want to use abilities that are good at close range, and good for crowd control, or immobilizing Wolverine altogether. The Hulk’s Radioactive Lockdown can stop Wolverine in his tracks.

Or, you can use the Hulk’s Indestructible Guard ability to create shields that protect against Wolverine’s attack, thus protecting your backline and empowering yourself.

Peni Parker’s Arachno Mines are also good traps to lay for Wolverine. At the very least, this will reduce Wolverine’s ability to move about freely in the backline so long as your webs are up.

Snagging him with a Cyber Web-Snare is also helpful for immobilizing him during a dive.

Lastly, Doctor Strange can be helpful against Wolverine due to Maelstrom of Madness. If Wolverine’s attacking you directly, you can charge up the Maelstrom of Madness and release Dark Magic repeatedly when Wolverine dives.

This is also helpful if you want to peel for your strategists, who might be getting flanked by Wolverine and other backline duelists.

How To Counter Wolverine As A Duelist

There are essentially two ways to deal with Wolverine as a duelist: either contest him with a fellow melee combatant and win out in a contest of skill, or play a mid-range duelist that can stay out of his reach. These are both viable but depend on your overall skill level.

Consider duelists like Magik or Iron Fist, both of whom can hold a candle to Wolverine’s melee damage and have self-heal abilities, thus giving them the upper hand.

However, if you’re playing either of these heroes, you will sacrifice your ability to dive into the enemy backline while contesting Wolverine.

Or, you can play a duelist like Storm or Hela, who can stay far out of Wolverine’s reach thanks to their flight abilities. Just warm up that aim, as Wolverine’s mobility can make him tricky to pin down. But, if you can land your shots, you’ll take him out in no time.
