Video game adaptations are the current trend in Hollywood and another popular sci-fi title is being pushed into the development pipeline for a TV version. Quantic Dream’s Beyond: Two Souls was released back in 2013 and now, over a decade later it’s getting a second lease on life.
Beyond: Two Souls featured two playable characters: Jodie Holmes (Elliot Page), a young woman with telepathic abilities, and Aiden, an incorporeal entity psychically connected to Jodie. Willem Dafoe also starred in the game as Nathan Dawkins, a researcher, and Jodie’s father figure, who helps her hone her powers and connection to Aiden throughout her life. Upon release, Beyond: Two Souls was praised for its performances and advanced character animations, which were bolstered by motion capture. To date, the game has a score of 71 on OpenCritic and went on to become one of the best-selling games on the PS3, although a sequel was never released.

Beyond: Two Souls TV Show Is In Development
Beyond: Two Souls’ journey is not over, however, as a TV adaptation of the sci-fi game has been announced. Deadline reported that Elliot Page himself is helping to develop the series with his company, Pageboy Productions, acquiring the rights for the game from Quantic Dream. The series is still in early development and no cast or creatives have been announced. “We want to create a unique vision of the characters and their journeys that resonates with fans and newcomers,” Page said in a statement. Pageboy Production head of development, Matt Jordan Smith, added that the adaptation will “honor the game’s legacy while inviting fresh perspectives,” and would explore the game’s themes of survival and the impact of split-second decisions.
“Filming the game was one of the most challenging and fulfilling acting experiences of my career. The story’s rich narrative and emotional depth offer us a fantastic foundation. We want to create a unique vision of the characters and their journeys that resonates with fans and newcomers.”
Page’s involvement will bring him back into collaboration with the team at Quantic Dream a decade after the game’s release. Beyond: Two Souls’ writer and director David Cage praised the news of the adaptation, saying “I was blown away by [Elliot’s] acting performance in the game, and I couldn’t think of anyone else to tell this story with the same passion on another medium.” Pageboy Productions has been responsible for ushering feature projects Backspot and Close to You to screen, and the company currently has The Darkness Outside Us, Len & Cub, and more on its development slate. Quantic Dream followed up Beyond: Two Souls with Detroit: Become Human in 2018 and is currently working on Star Wars Eclipse.
Beyond: Two Souls Joins an Array of Video Game Adaptations In Development
Beyond: Two Souls will mark another tricky video game adaptation given its non-linear storytelling. Similar to The Last of Us Part 2 and Until Dawn, which also contain non-traditional narratives and are receiving adaptations, it will be interesting to see how the creatives tackle these specific video game storytelling and gameplay techniques for the screen. The Beyond: Two Souls announcement comes off the back of a slew of video game adaptations in the works, with news of a new Resident Evil film recently coming to light and Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn also announced for the movie treatment, indicating a crowded video game movie and series marketplace in the future.
