How To Get 3 Star Spider Crabs In Dave The Diver

In Dave The Diver, there are some creatures that are not easy to catch. Or, catch alive that is. The spider crab is one of those very species, making it seem like the only way to bring these crustaceans back up to land is to viciously crack them up with rocks.

If you’re looking to catch the big one (and maybe get its fin for upgrades) this guide has you covered.

Well, there are other ways to catch these crabs. The game only presents one obvious solution, but as you continue playing, you will be able to craft or buy what you need to bring with you on your dive. This guide will go over where you need to go and what you need to do.

Introduction To Spider Crabs

There are many members of the crustacean family that hide away in rocks, needing to be coaxed into traps. That is not true for the massive spider crabs. No rocks could contain these creatures.

Spider Crab Locations

Spider crabs lurk in the Blue Hole Depths. It will be made obvious when you enter the correct depth since your flashlight will turn on and the water will become very dark blue.

You will find two spider crabs when you come across the skeletal remains of a massive, whale-like creature. You are shown this location whilst following the pesky little octopus that annoys Dave but actually helps by creating shortcuts throughout the game.

You can also find spider crabs just below the entrance of the underwater lake if you swim down and to the right of the stone doorway. You can also find them just outside the door to The Sea People Village. They live along the bottom to the left of the Village.

If you are struggling to find them, note that they can only be found between depths of 130m to 250m. You can find out how deep you are in the water by looking at the bottom left of your screen.

But the basics are, if you can see a lighter blue sea, you’re too high up. If you hit the door to The Sea People Village, don’t enter and go left instead.

Spider crabs are only active during the morning and afternoon dives. You can not go into the depths at night, meaning you won’t find any if you decide to jump back into the water when it’s dark out.

How Do You Catch Spider Crabs?

You will quickly find that spider crabs are immune to the damage from your gun. So, how do you catch them? There are a few different ways to go about it.

Blue Rocks

One of the convenient things about all the spider crab locations is that you will notice these loose, blue rocks on the ground. Once you unlock the special gloves for Dave that allow him to grip and pull several stakes in the nearby, underwater cliffs, then you can pick up these rocks and use them as weapons.

Then, you essentially throw rocks at the crabs to kill them.

  • Pick up one of the blue rocks.
  • Poise yourself high above the spider crab, directly over it.
  • Drop the rock.
  • Pick up the dead crab.

It’s that easy. However, dead sea creatures and fish are often of worse quality. So, while this is the easiest way, and the only way available readily to you, it isn’t the best way.

Steel Net Sensor Traps

Dave The Diver Cobra's Shop with Steel Net Sensor Traps highlighted and explained.

As the game progresses, you will be introduced to tuna, which requires these fancy Traps that Cobra comes in possession of: Steel Net Sensor Traps. Even though these are used on the high-octane, speed demons that are tuna, you can use them on spider crabs too.

  • Set the Trap on the ground out of the crab’s reach.
  • Coax the crab to it by swimming closer to it.
  • Collect the crab from the trap.

This will give you a spider crab that is still alive and of a higher quality, either two or three stars. You only have two traps when you buy them from Cobra’s Premium Shop, so you will only end up with two because the crabs are never close enough together to lure multiple to a trap at once.

You can also use this method on the sally lightfoot crabs, which leap at you when you swim to the left inside the sunken yellow cargo boat you can enter.

Steel Net Gun

Deep into the game’s progression, you will finally be able to upgrade your Net Gun to the highest option possible: The Steel Net Gun. This gun can completely replace the Steel Net Sensor Traps as it does the same thing, but more efficiently.

Instead of needing to set a trap and lure the beast, you can set Dave in a safe place, take aim, and fire a Steel Net at the crab, catching it alive and well.

Similarly to the Traps, this gives you the ability to catch spider crabs at the highest quality possible.

To make a Steel Net Gun, you will have to have a Large Net Gun as well as a Steel Rope, three pelican eel skin, 20 topaz, and 3,400 gold to spend on the project.

Fish Farm

Although you weren’t able to originally, an update made it possible to have spider crabs in your fish farm. This means that instead of needing to constantly go out and catch them each time you want them for a dish, you can have them grow up in captivity.

This will happen naturally as the game progresses, catching both the crabs themselves as well as their roe, but you will have to have a spot opened up that supports fish and creatures you find at that same depth: between 130m to 250m.

To unlock this space, and eventually upgrade how many fish and creatures it can hold, you will need to buy the 130m through 250m upgrades from Otto.
