A Pokemon Trading Card Game fan has shared an exciting victory with the tabletop community, flaunting the rare Pikachu ex card they pulled from a sealed Surging Sparks box. Surging Sparks is the eighth main expansion in the Pokemon TCG Scarlet and Violet series and was released in November 2024. The set contained 252 cards in its English release and continued the introduction of Stellar Tera Pokemon ex into the tabletop game.
In addition to the trading card game, which kicked off in the late 90s and was based on the original Game Boy games released by Game Freak and Nintendo, the Pokemon IP also hosts Nintendo Switch RPGs and an ongoing anime, not to mention two very successful mobile games. Pokemon GO has a stacked schedule of Mythical, Legendary, and Mega raids in January 2025, including Giratina and Shadow Registeel, and the digital TCG alternative Pokemon TCG: Pocket has also received updates to the Premium Pass benefits to welcome in the new year.

Cyrano, Kecleon, Clobbopus, and Archaludon ex were among some of the rarer pulls, but the main score of the opening was the Pikachu ex card featuring colorful alternative artwork. The fan explained they had “caved” by opening the booster box that had previously been kept sealed, but the impulse certainly paid off. It’s fairly common for collectors to keep booster boxes sealed, as their worth grows in the years to follow, but another Pokemon TCG fan recently opened their six-month-old sealed products in one day.

There are several rare cards to be found in the Pokemon TCG Scarlet and Violet Surging Sparks expansion, and the Pikachu ex card is currently worth approximately $420 ungraded. Redditors were very impressed that the rare electric mouse had been discovered, and the original poster admitted they began regretting opening the sealed box until Pikachu revealed itself. The fan also confirmed the Surging Sparks booster box was the final sealed product in their inventory.
