The Misconception Behind X’s Persona

X’s Organization and Its Affects on His Health

Manga pannel of Uzuki uploaded by EUREKA! on Pintrest

Kei Uzuki also known as X/Slur is the leader of the X organization, a group of rogue assassins seeking to overthrow/destroy the JAA. The group was originally formed after Uzuki, with the objective of rescuing Gaku, Haruma, Kumanomi, and others, attacked the Al Kamar orphanage and fled the scene. The orphanage was referred to as “more of a scheme” than “a place of refuge”, with the sole purpose of reproducing order-level assassins. And X too, was a by-product of this place…

Interestingly enough, this gamble ensured that each member would at least rival if not straight-up surpass the current members of the order. This idea was affirmed when Kanaguri decimated Satoda, who was once offered a position in the order and was even regarded as an Aikido Master. Only to be reaffirmed again in chapter 151, where Gaku was shown trading blows with Nagumo on a terrifying level.

However, even with all their strength, Uzuki proves to be an entirely different breed. The mangaka forged this idea during the events of chapter 167, where Slur managed to one-shot Takamura (someone who’s stronger than Prime Sakamoto). Uzuki is also shown to speed-blitz some of the strongest characters. And with Takamura’s death not only does X scale above the organization but is also arguably the current strongest in the verse.

X’s Personality is Multifaceted

From Benevolence to Malevolence

Kei Uzuki's personality disorder chapter 104

Uzuki maintains a calm yet cold-hearted appearance, as evident by the mass murder of JAA and the onslaught at the Al Kamar orphanage. However, later it’s revealed that close comrades/friends are an immediate exception to this gruesome side. Slur’s concern for Uda’s sacrifice during the encounter with Takamura is what further substantiates this claim.

And yet, it was revealed in chapter 104 that in the past Uzuki used to be very quiet and somewhat benevolent for an assassin. His affection for human life wasn’t just limited to companions but the entire race. In chapter 174 the mass murderer is shown to state:

It doesn’t feel right to take people’s lives just for my own happiness

The author hints that the main contributor to this change was the development of his Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

How the Past Affects the Present

The root point of X’s disorder dates back to the murder of Rion Akao. So let’s detour to when Asaki wanted Slur to eliminate a certain candidate before letting Uzuki and his family (the Al Kamar Orphans) off the leash. And of course, the events of the following chapter ended with Asaki’s evil acts boring their fruit and Uzuki unknowingly ending Rion’s (who just “happened” to be this “candidate”) life.

If people were to go back to chapter 104 now and focus on the cause of the Dissociative Identity Disorder then it wouldn’t be unreasonable to deduce that this is when Uzuki developed this condition and copied all of Rion’s traits to cope with the immense trauma the situation brought.

Now, in the present, every reader has witnessed that this development just amps his arsenal even more as X is no longer a one-trick pony. Uzuki’s capabilities now extend to more than just himself allowing for perfect mimicry of all traits/abilities of the personality in play. Infact, Slur’s DID is the sole reason for the victory secured against Takamura and why this fiendish man is now considered The Honored One of his verse.

After the death of Rion Akao, the mangaka wastes no time and introduces fans to how Uzuki views the separation between the normal world and the assassin world. According to Slur, the separation does not exist. The question of why someone like Rion died while people like Asaki, the organization, and Uzuki were still left breathing is deeply unpleasant to X. And after realizing that the kindness Rion wanted to protect does not exist, Slur comes to a single conclusion:

I don’t care what happens to this world

Thus, following the attack on the Al Kamar orphanage, the personality X/Slur is born. One that completely overwrites whatever ideals Uzuki held close to his heart. And one that only seeks to destroy the JAA that inflicted so much pain on his life and those around him. His conversation with Kashima solidifies that X has no desire for a new regime after the fall of the JAA. Following the inconsistencies with his character, it would be fair to conclude that Uzuki’s denial helps him deviate from his real goal, which was always revenge against the JAA.
