What Does Honey Do?
Honey does two main things: it tops up the player’s hunger level, and it cures infections.
Curing Infections With Honey
No matter how careful you are, you are bound to get infected at some point. Pretty much every enemy in the game has a chance to infect you with the zombie virus each time they land a successful hit. Once you are infected, a percentage bar will appear in the bottom corner of the screen. This percentage will gradually go up until the infection is treated. Should the percentage reach 100%, you’ll die.
While the rate at which the infection progresses is rather slow, it increases each time you get hit by an enemy. So, if you pick up an infection halfway through clearing a difficult POI, you can expect the infection to worsen fast as you clear the rest of the location. Honey reduces your infection rate by 5%. This effect stacks, meaning that if you consume two jars of honey, your infection will be reduced by a total of 10%.
Curing an infection doesn’t happen instantly. When you take a cure, the infection icon at the bottom of the screen will turn white and the number will start to tick down. If the icon turns back to an orange color, that means that your cure has worn off and your infection is slowly growing again. Honey is the lowest quality infection cure; however, it’s also the easiest to come by. The other cures are Herbal Antibiotics, and Antibiotics.
Honey As A Food Item
As mentioned, honey also helps to fill the player’s hunger bar. By default, consuming honey will give the player 8 food and 3 health. While this can be helpful in a pinch, it’s best to save honey to treat infections.
Honey can also be used to craft Grandpa’s Awesome Sauce, a special drink that gives you better trader prices for 3 minutes. While you can purchase this drink from traders and from vending machines, it is rather costly to buy. In addition, crafting Grandpa’s Awesome Sauce gives you a 10% bartering discount. To craft it, you’ll need the following:
- 1 Jar Of Honey
- 50 Dukes
- 5 Mushrooms
- 10 Gas Can
- 1 Ear Of Super Corn
Getting Honey From Tree Stumps
The main way you’ll get honey is from tree stumps, which are primarily located in the pine forest and snow biomes. When broken down, you’ll get wood from the tree stump. There’s a 20% chance that you’ll receive some honey once the stump has been completely destroyed. That percentage doubles to 40% if the stump is located within the boundary of a POI/point of interest. The best POI to visit for collecting honey is the Journey’s End Retirement Home, because there are usually multiple tree stumps located within the POI’s boundary.
Getting Honey From Traders
Trader inventories are always somewhat random. However, there are two things that dictate what type of items a trader will have: the player’s loot stage, and the specific trader. As you make your way through the game, your loot stage will go up. You can see your loot stage by checking out the character section and selecting core stats. The higher your loot stage, the better quality items a trader will have in their inventory. While honey isn’t an ultra-rare item to find in a trader’s inventory, it is somewhat uncommon for it to be sold during the early stages of the game.
Each trader varies in what they tend to sell. Trader Rekt specializes in food and seeds, meaning that he’ll have a slightly higher chance of stocking honey. Trader Jen specializes in medicinal items, so she also has a good chance of stocking honey in her inventory. It’s worth checking in with the traders every few days as their stock changes fairly often.
When you complete a mission for a trader, there’s a small chance of receiving honey when you return to the trader to claim your reward. However, you may also be given an option to select a higher quality cure. Be sure to look at all the possible rewards before making a decision.
How To Get Honey Early On
It’s pretty easy to get honey on day one. With every playthrough, you get given a set of challenges to complete. One of the challenges requires you to harvest a total of 5 jars of honey from tree stumps. If you track the challenge, it will highlight all nearby tree stumps with an orange marker, making them much easier to spot. If you do this as soon as you’ve completed your initial starter challenges, then you can finish day one with several jars of honey, helping you build up a stockpile of infection cures.
Finding Honey In Loot Containers
While it doesn’t happen all that often, you can find honey inside certain loot containers. Your game stage and loot stage have a large impact when it comes to the items you’ll find inside containers. Also, rank two of the skill Master Chef increases your chances of finding salvageable food inside dumpsters. Since honey technically counts as a food item, this skill can be very useful.

For the most part, you’ll find honey inside Shamway crates and food piles, which can be found inside grocery stores and kitchens. You may also find these containers at the end of a POI as one of the main loot crates. If you check these loot crates, invest a couple of points in Master Chef, and check dumpsters, you will end up with a pretty impressive honey stockpile in no time.
A Book That Increases Your Honey Finding Odds
There are lots of book sets you to collect and read in 7 Days to Die. Among these books, Wasteland Treasures Volume 1 gives you a small chance to harvest honey from regular trees. The chance of getting honey from cutting down a tree is considerably lower than chopping down tree stumps; however, since you’ll need lots of wood for building and crafting, you’ll be chopping down trees regularly. This book gives you a nice little boost to the amount of honey you’ll collect as you progress.
