Summary

  • The Tamagami are stronger than Dabura, hinting at Goku’s strength in Daima.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Daima, Episode 10, “Ocean”, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

The first true challenge Dragon Ball Daima is tossing Goku’s way is the Tamagami who guard the Demon Realm’s Dragon Balls. These three sentinels are placed in each of the three Demon Worlds, standing proud and tall until a challenger approaches them trying to obtain their respective Dragon Ball. Like all the other Dragon Ball sets, the Demon Realm’s set was created by a Namekian; only this time, it was by one named Neva. After creating the Dragon Balls, Neva proceeded to create the Tamagami to stand guard over the Dragon Balls, which has prevented anyone from making a wish for a long period of time.

Goku already faced Tamagami Number Three in Dragon Ball Daima episode 8, “Tamagami”, who was the guardian placed in the Third Demon World, and was guarding the Three-Star Dragon Ball. Goku managed to beat it with the help of his Super Saiyan 2 form, but with Goku being in the body of a kid and all, how strong exactly was the Tamagami? How does it compare to the previous villains and rivals Goku’s had to face in the past?

Dragon Ball Daima: The Difference Between Ki and Magic

Magic has always been a thing in Dragon Ball, but Daima is the first time the series has taken a deeper look at the Demon Realm’s version of ki.

They’re Stronger than Dabura

King Gomah’s Predecessor Fought the Tamagami and Lost

Dabura in Dragon Ball Z

So far, the strongest recorded character to have ever fought the Tamagami, aside from Goku, is the previous Demon King Dabura. Panzy stated in Dragon Ball Daima episode 7, “Collar”, that she heard Dabura couldn’t beat the Tamagami and obtain the Dragon Balls. Panzy’s remark aligns with King Gomah’s statement in episode 1, “Conspiracy”, saying that no one has made a wish with the Demon Realm’s Dragon Balls for a long time.

So, the Tamagami are all stronger than Dabura, but where does that place them on the bigger scale of Dragon Ball power levels? Well, in Dragon Ball Z episode 227, “Heart of a Villain”, upon observing Dabura’s ki, Goku claims that Dabura is about as strong as Cell.

However, keep in mind that Goku was referring to Dabura under Babidi’s spell. Babidi’s mind control doesn’t just force a person to obey his will; it also amplifies their power greatly, as evidenced by Spopovich, Yamu, and, of course, Majin Vegeta. This enhancement means that the Dabura that fought the Tamagami would have been at least marginally weaker than the Dabura Goku was sensing. There is no set amount for how much Babidi’s spell boosts a person’s power level, but it doesn’t seem to be an outrageous amount, since even under it, Vegeta was only about on par with Goku’s Super Saiyan 2. So, it should still be fair to say that the Tamagami are at least relative to Cell’s power if they’re stronger than Dabura without Babidi’s spell.

It’s implied since the start of Dragon Ball Daima that Goku and the rest of the Z Fighters are not as strong as they were in their original, older bodies. But now that Goku has faced and beaten someone who can be compared to a previous villain, his strength in his new body is that much clearer.

It appears that Goku’s, and by extension the rest of the Z Fighter’s, power hasn’t gone down by a detrimental amount. Being able to beat someone stronger than Dabura while only requiring Super Saiyan 2 means he’s close to his strength during the Majin Buu Saga. Daima takes place several months to a year after the Buu Saga, so Goku should be even stronger now, which means that being a child probably did decrease his power, just not as much as King Gomah would’ve wanted.

The biggest issues with them becoming children are probably that their smaller bodies have more limited reach than their older ones and that they have to get reacquainted with how certain ki techniques work. The raw amount of ki inside them seems to have only slightly diminished.

They Might Be Stronger than They’re Putting On

At Least in the Case of Tamagami Number Three.

As strong as the Tamagami might be, there’s a chance that they might not even be going all out against the challengers they face. During Goku’s fight, Tamagami Number Three actually asked him to stop after getting hit by his Kamehameha. Sure, it definitely looked like the Tamagami was bruised and battered, but something about that scene felt off. He specifically stopped once he “understood” Goku’s power, implying that maybe the Tamagami were instructed to only fight up to a certain point. Tamagami Number Three also showed that he could have repaired his hammer at any time, but didn’t, as if he wanted to test Goku’s fighting prowess without a weapon.

“I admit it! I submit!… There’s no point in continuing further. I understand your power.” – Tamagami Number Three to Goku

Tamagami Number Two and One Might Be Stronger than Number Three

Tamagami Number One in Dragon Ball DAIMA

Even though the vibe and storytelling are vastly different from the previous series, this is still Dragon Ball. And if there’s anything the series is known for, it’s the fact that the threats just keep on escalating. It wouldn’t be surprising at all to find out that Tamagami Number Three was the weakest one and that Two and One are on a whole different level of power.

Dragon Ball Daima episode 10 gave fans a taste of what Tamagami Number One could do as it fought Majin Kuu. The Tamagami easily defeated someone with the essence of Majin Buu in them. Now, admittedly, it’s also entirely possible that Majin Kuu is just that disappointingly weak, but it’s still likely that Tamagami Number One and Two are stronger than Three.
