It’s been just over a month since DC fans had to bid a sad farewell to the showstopping series The Penguin and since its explosive finale that centered around Oz Cobb and Sofia, viewers have been champing at the bit for the series to return with a season two. To give its fanbase a little reassurance, as well as quite a lot of excitement, The Batman director Matt Reeves shares an update on the HBO show’s return.
Starring in movies that include The Banshees of Inisherin, In Bruges, and Phone Booth, Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oz Cobb was met with critical acclaim due to how well he pulled off the Gotham Kingpin of the underworld, not to mention how incredible his prosthetics were that transformed him into the devious mobster. Arguably, one of The Penguin‘s best villains came in the form of Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti, whose amazing performance earned her a nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series at the Critics Choice Awards this year. The Penguin also opened to 5.3 million US viewers across all platforms since its debut in the first four days, firmly marking its territory as one of the best shows of 2024, but has its obvious success been enough to greenlight another season?

Matt Reeves Provides An Update On The Penguin Season 2
In a recent Directors on Directors interview with Variety, Matt Reeves chatted with The Batman cast member Zoë Kravitz, who plays Selina Kyle, about The Batman 2, in which he confirmed that the sequel was in the final stages of its script. Along with this massive The Batman update, Reeves also confirmed that he was in talks with The Penguin showrunner, Lauren LeFranc, regarding bringing the beloved series back for one more season. “Yeah, we’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season,” Reeves said in reply to Kravitz’s question about whether the show would come back again. “That was a special experience. I just feel really fortunate. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal.”
The Penguin season one’s ending was as intense as it was infuriating. With Oz getting what he wanted all along, things didn’t go so well for Sofia who was sent back to Arkham Asylum. However, her final letter from Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, while in her cell, could offer up a new antagonist in Oz’s world when season two of the show rolls around. With the Bat-Signal lighting up the skies at the end of The Penguin, this too could set up a huge battle between Batman and Oz, which might see its season return as one of the best yet.
Although fans might have a bit of a wait before they hear anything about a second season or a release window, The Penguin is streaming in its entirety on Max right now. As for The Batman Part 2, it is due for release sometime in 2026.
