Avowed: Best Wizard Skills

There are three classes in Avowed: Wizard, Ranger, and Fighter. Of the three class skill trees, Wizards have the most options thanks to an abundance of Wizard Spells, in addition to passive abilities like other classes.

Avowed: What To Do First

If you are struggling to figure out what to do first in Avowed, these starter tips will help guide you in the right direction.

The best Wizard skills Avowed players should pick up first are those that blast away enemies quickly, grant powerful Essence passives, or enhance your typically-squishy defenses. These eight best Wizard spells are available to all classes and playstyles, as long as you meet the Required Level and have enough Essence to cast them.

Grimoire Snap

Blast Away Enemies With A Stylish Snap

  • Required Level: 5
  • Essence Cost: 35
  • Base Cooldown: 20 sec

Grimoire Snap is one of the best Wizard abilities in Avowed for its amazing close-range damage and stylish visuals. When you cast Grimoire Snap, you will forcefully shut your equipped Grimoire shut, dealing Explosive Damage to nearby enemies that will launch them away from you.

It’s one of the best spells to cast for how cool it makes you feel as a Wizard, but it’s also extremely effective for both short-range Battlemages and for builds that need a way to push enemies back quickly.

Blood Magic

Cast Spells With Health Instead Of Essence

Avowed Best Wizard Skills Spells Tier List Blood Magic

Blood Magic is a Passive Wizard skill that lets you continue casting Spells by siphoning your Health if you run out of Essence. The Essence cost for spells cast this way is multiplied by 1.5x, but in a pickle, it’s one of the best ways to ensure you have enough Essence to finish off a combat encounter.

Avowed: How To Heal & Increase Health

To heal in Avowed, and to increase Health, Avowed players can consume certain Potions and Drinks and slot certain abilities.

With an Essence Potion, it might take a few seconds for your Essence to regenerate enough to cast a spell, let alone the spell-casting time, by which point an enemy will have closed in on you. With Blood Magic, you’ll be able to finish off the target before they can reach you, end combat faster, then recover your Health after the fight is over.

Blizzard

Easy, Freezy AoE Spell

Avowed Best Wizard Skills Spells Tier List Blizzard
  • Required Level: 5
  • Essence Cost: 50
  • Base Duration: 3 sec
  • Base Cooldown: 15 sec

The ability to Freeze enemies is extremely strong in Avowed, which makes the Blizzard skill particularly useful and one of the best Avowed Wizard spells. When cast, a Blizzard will rain down on a wide AoE for three seconds, building Freeze accumulation in all but the most cold-resistant enemies, and freezing large swathes of water.

For most enemies, one Blizzard is enough to Freeze them solid. The damage from this skill is nothing to sneer at, either, but its main use is for freezing enemies, thus controlling the flow of combat.

When you’re faced with more than four or five enemies at once, pop off a Blizzard to reduce how many you have to deal with at once. Enemies can be frozen mid-pose, so it’s useful in the middle of combat, too.

Missile Salvo

Summons Multiple Missiles Over Six Seconds

Avowed Best Wizard Skills Spells Tier List Missile Salvo
  • Required Level: 10
  • Essence Cost: 75
  • Base Duration: 6 sec
  • Base Cooldown: 20 sec

Many of the high-level Wizard spells in Avowed aren’t worth the Essence cost until you can significantly boost your Max Essence and ability to regenerate Essence. But Missile Salvo is one of the few that’s totally worth it.

Like the Minor Missiles spell, Missile Salvo will automatically track and hone to enemies. Only instead of a single barrage of three purple orbs, casting Missile Salvo summons an enormous sphere that hovers over the battlefield for six seconds and continuously hurls Minor Missiles at nearby enemies.

It lasts for a long time and has a relatively short cooldown for how powerful the skill is. However, the high Essence cost of 75 can be hard to justify using this spell more than once in combat.

Crackling Bolt

Great For Chain Damage & Solving Puzzles

Avowed Best Wizard Skills Spells Tier List Crackling Bolt
  • Required Level: 5
  • Essence Cost: 50
  • Base Cooldown: 15 sec

Crackling Bolt is an electricity spell Wizards can pick up at Level 5. When cast, you will launch a bolt of electricity that bounces between enemies and the environment three times, dealing high Electricity damage and Shock Accumulation.

All Playable Races in Avowed

In Avowed, playable races are not too different from one another, in terms of gameplay – but there aren’t many options for races in Avowed.

The interesting thing about this that makes it one of the best Avowed Wizard spells is that it’s useful against groups of enemies and solo enemies (and bosses) alike. Because it bounces off of enemies and the environment, a single enemy can get hit three times by one cast.

This spell is also incredibly useful for exploration because there are a lot of machines throughout the world that require an Electricity spell (or throwable) to activate. Crackling Bolt will fly exactly where you aim it, allowing you to activate these mechanisms from further away with more precision than other Electricity spells.

Fireball

A Must-Have High-Damage Fire Spell

Avowed Best Wizard Skills Spells Tier List Fireball
  • Required Level: 5
  • Essence Cost: 50
  • Base Cooldown: 15 sec

A fantasy classic, Fireball is one of the most powerful mid-range spells in Avowed. When you cast Fireball, a small area will be highlighted on the ground, and all enemies contained in that target zone will take an enormous amount of Fire damage when the Fireball hits.

Fireball leaves a pool of Fire that deals damage over time, and builds Fire Accumulation to potentially Ignite enemies, too. When you get Fireball, cast it on cooldown to deal immense damage to everything but the most fire-resistant enemies – it’s surprisingly strong, and capable of taking out most minor enemies in a single cast.

Grimoire Mastery

Necessary For Wizards, Useful For Battlemages

Avowed Best Wizard Skills Spells Tier List Grimoire Mastery
  • Required Level: 5/10/15/20

Grimoire Mastery is one of the best Wizard skills to pick up for two reasons. For one, players who don’t focus entirely on the Wizard tree, but who use Grimoires in their build, can reduce the cost of their off-hand spells.

But players who exclusively spellcast will want to pick this up too because it unlocks new Spells in the Wizard Tree and unlocks advanced spells sealed within higher-level Grimoires.

As a Wizard build, Grimoire Mastery is something you should invest a point in every five levels to keep up and unlock more powerful spells. But if you’re a Battlemage, or just dabbling in the Wizard tree, its usefulness depends on how much you use Grimoires in combat.

Arcane Veil

Cheap Defence Bonus Usable By Any Build

Avowed Best Wizard Skills Spells Tier List Arcane Veil
  • Required Level: 1
  • Essence Cost: 10
  • Base Duration: 20 sec
  • Base Cooldown: 15 sec

Arcane Veil is such a good ability that, as part of one of the first Avowed patches, it was majorly nerfed. Still, Arcane Veil remains one of the best Wizard skills because of how strong its effect is for all builds, and for how easy it is to acquire.

When cast, this defensive spell increases Damage Reduction by 25% and makes all spells you cast Uninterruptible. This is an essential skill for any pure spellcaster to avoid being interrupted in combat, but for a casting cost of just 10 Essence, the 25% Damage Reduction is incredibly powerful for just about every playstyle.

Before combat starts, pop off an Arcane Veil, then refresh it about every 20 seconds when it runs out. Combat will feel instantly more forgiving – but not quite as forgiving, perhaps, as when the buff reduced incoming damage by 50%.
