The Fourth Jurassic World Movie Is a "Rebirth" For The Franchise

Summary

  • Jurassic World Rebirth will be a brand-new chapter in the franchise but may lay the foundation for a new trilogy.
  • The plot follows Zora Bennett and her team securing genetic material from dinosaurs for life-saving medicine.
  • Jurassic World Rebirth is set five years after Jurassic World Dominion.

Jurassic World wrapped up its trilogy in 2022 with Dominion, but much like those dinosaurs, the franchise never lies dormant for long. Some new details about the fourth Jurassic World film have been unearthed, providing an interesting insight into how the new film fits into the franchise overall.

Jurassic World Rebirth will be the seventh film in the long-running franchise, which began with Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park in 1993. The franchise was then rebooted with the Jurassic World sequel trilogy in 2015, starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Earlier in 2024, it was announced that another Jurassic World film was in development with Rogue One and The Creator director Gareth Edwards on board. Casting and filming for the new Jurassic World movie came in quick succession with Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey attached, playing new characters.

New Jurassic World Rebirth Plot Details Revealed

A preview of Jurassic World Rebirth was recently released by Entertainment Weekly, providing fresh insights into the dinosaur blockbuster and some new images of the cast in action. Edwards revealed that Jurassic World Rebirth is intended to feel “like a brand-new chapter in this franchise” with a potential trilogy on the table pending Universal’s go-ahead. The filmmaker took a “back to basics” approach to the fourth Jurassic World film, meaning more filming on-location with less blue screen and a straightforward story with new stars.

I can’t speak for Universal, but it did feel like a new trilogy, in a way. I’m not sure what their plans are, but it felt like the beginning of a brand-new chapter in this franchise. To me, it’s a giant love letter to Steven Spielberg and his earlier films.

Jurassic World Rebirth is set five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, establishing that the film is still a sequel despite the Rebirth subtitle. At the end of Jurassic World Dominion, dinosaurs had been let loose on Earth and were cohabitating with humans. When Rebirth rolls around, the dinosaurs are once again dying out. The story will follow Johansson’s Zora Bennett who is contracted by a pharmaceutical company to extract the DNA from three pivotal dinosaur species so that it can be used to concoct life-saving medicine for humans. Joining Zora is Ali’s Duncan Kincaid, the captain of the team’s ship, and Bailey’s Dr. Henry Loomis, a paleontologist out of his depth on the risky expedition. Edwards describes the trio as “less of a love triangle and much more of a competitive ‘who’s the alpha in the group?’”

On top of this dynamic, Jurassic World Rebirth throws in the Delgado family (played by Luna Blaise, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, David Iacono, and Audrina Miranda), who are civilians stuck on a capsized boat and in need of rescue. As for how it turns out, Edwards teased that “obviously, it all goes wrong,” but in such a way that Jurassic Park fans will get a kick out of all the dinosaur action in store.

Jurassic World Rebirth will be released on July 2, 2025.
