Summary

  • Lead star Mackie assures fans that reshoots for Captain America 4 were not significant.
  • Rumors of extensive reshoots for Captain America: Brave New World likely exaggerated.
  • Despite the mixed buzz, positive trailer reactions suggest Captain America: Brave New World may surprise.

Captain America: Brave New World reshoots sparked rumors that significant changes were made to the film. Now, lead star Anthony Mackie has reassuring news for fans worried these reshoots meant Captain America 4 was in trouble.

Captain America: Brave New World marks the first feature film with Anthony Mackie in the titular role since Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers passed the mantle to Sam Wilson at the end of Avengers: Endgame. There are many reasons to be excited about Captain America: Brave New World, such as the return of Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader or Harrison Ford’s President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross turning into Red Hulk. However, there are rumors that Captain America: Brave New World isn’t working out and that extensive reshoots were needed to retool the film, but Mackie has attempted to debunk those claims.

A Young Avengers movie is rumored to be on the MCU’s slate, and the showrunner of an acclaimed X-Men show may be eyed to direct the film.

In November, reports claimed Captain America: Brave New World reshoots were taking place after another negative test screening. While this isn’t uncommon, particularly for big-budget superhero movies, this wasn’t the first time Captain America: Brave New World underwent reshoots that reportedly retooled the film. During an interview with Empire, Mackie refuted the idea that Captain America: Brave New World was extensively reshot and noted that every Marvel film he’s worked on underwent reshoots:

It wasn’t retooled at all. […] Every Marvel movie I’ve done has done reshoots, so it’s not retooling or remaking. You basically get the movie and the story you want, you edit it together, then go back and shoot a few more scenes

Notable scooper MyTimeToShineHello refuted Mackie’s claims that Captain America: Brave New World reshoots didn’t retool the movie. According to MyTimeToShineHello, the Captain America: Brave New World reshoots “changed the ending, the opening, added a new villain and another Hulk and a new post-credits scene and changed a character’s death.” Early set photos suggested Captain America: Brave New World killed off President Ross, but Ford told Empire he was “awaiting” his “new assignment,” suggesting Ross could return to the MCU. This may be the “changed” death MyTimeToShineHello referred to. There were also reports of the villainous Serpent Society group being scrapped from Captain America: Brave New World, and Blake Nelson’s comments about ‘redoing’ the film left some fans with the impression that Captain America 4 did need reshoots to save the film.

Mackie may be correct about Captain America: Brave New World not being changed significantly during reshoots. Perhaps time will tell. But all this chatter about production troubles and shifting release dates already has some fans convinced Captain America: Brave New World will be bad. If enough audiences aren’t convinced the film will be good, it could result in another box office dud for the MCU. Then again, Captain America: Brave New World trailer reactions have been largely positive. Maybe the new Star Bangled Man with a Plan will prove the naysayers wrong.

Captain America: Brave New World is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 14, 2025.
