Pokemon TCG Pocket Has A New Pack Trick: Getting Your Kids Involved

Pokemon TCG Pocket Has Amassed 60 Million Players In Seven Weeks

I’ve been obsessed with Pokemon TCG Pocket recently, despite the fact that I know deep down it’s constantly trying to part me from my cash. But there’s something about collecting pretty digital pictures that makes the neurons in my brain bounce around my skull with joy. I still don’t have the fancy alt art Gengar I wanted from Genetic Apex, but I’m moving onto Mythical Island with glee.

I’m still saving up my pack hourglasses for the next full expansion, but I saved my two packs and plenty of Wonder Pick hourglasses for the new cards. But nothing could have prepared me for the luck I was about to have.

I noticed a while back that my pack luck had diminished. It led me down a conspiracy theory rabbit hole, as I wasn’t even pulling duplicates of full art cards I already had. My Wonder Picks, too, had very few rare cards. It wasn’t that I wasn’t picking them, I wasn’t even seeing them.

Rather than get annoyed about my lack of Gengar every time I opened a pack, I enlisted the help of my three year old. She likes Pokemon in the kind of way that toddlers like anything – she recognises Snorlax, Pikachu, and Charizard and has them emblazoned on jumpers and lunchboxes, but doesn’t understand that there’s a whole RPG series behind these animals. I’ll tell her eventually, but for the time being she just likes ripping digital packs on my phone twice a day.

I think half of the excitement for her is that she gets to play on my phone for a minute, which otherwise isn’t allowed. But she quickly caught onto how to tap each pack, rip the top off, and swipe through the cards within, and we enjoy our twice daily ritual. It’s lowkey kind of scary that she already understood the motions of swiping and tapping on a screen (she even tried pinching to zoom; I blame nursery), but it’s a fun activity we can do together.

Getting my daughter to open my packs has had two effects on me: firstly, it makes Pokemon Pocket a more communal, shared experience. That’s lovely. Secondly, it means I have to fake excitement for every card that appears, no matter whether it’s a brand new alt art or my 243rd Psyduck.

I don’t want her to be disappointed in her little pack, so I feign excitement for every ‘mon that appears. We say hello to each little critter and give them a clap at the end, no matter their rarity or my personal feelings towards them. It’s nice to put a positive spin on what is so often a disappointing experience, and it’s made me a lot less salty about never pulling a flipping Gengar.

I feel like this gave me some good karma when it came to opening my first of two Mythical Island packs. Either that or the game is being more generous again to pull lapsed players back in with good pulls.

But the first pack my daughter opened for Mythical Island contained the immersive rare Celebi. The first pack. It wasn’t a god pack or anything, but I didn’t even know this card existed. It played one of those beautiful animations and I was beside myself. I’ll be honest, my daughter wasn’t bothered. She didn’t even care for the immersive painting zooming around a tranquil forest. I honestly believe that she’d have been happier to see a regular Pikachu, because at least she’d recognise it.

My second pack was nothing special but my two Wonder Picks rewarded me with Vaporeon and Aerodactyl ex, so I really can’t complain.

It’s a great feeling when you get some luck, but you can turn bad packs into good feelings, too. Sharing your hobbies with your kids, or anyone else around you, is by far the best way to experience them. If you don’t have kids, find one on the street, force your phone into their hand, and hope they don’t run off with it. You never know, it might just be that toddlers have the magic touch. They might net you that immersive rare. Or they might find nothing but commons in every pack for a month. Either way, you’ll feel glad you opened it.
