Though Fortnite is far from a new game, it had a chance to win two different titles at The Game Awards 2024. There are awards every year for various things relating to “ongoing games”. In this case, Epic Games’ title was up for Best Ongoing Game, an award it has been nominated for countless times, and Best Community Support, another one that it has had several nominations for. Unfortunately, it fell short in both.
Fortnite Ends Up Winless at The Game Awards
Fortnite had been nominated twice at The Game Awards, but it was up against very steep competition. For Best Community Support, Fortnite, which did have a good case thanks to impressive updates and the return of Fortnite OG, was facing Baldur’s Gate 3, Final Fantasy 14, Helldivers 2, and No Man’s Sky. Baldur’s Gate 3 won.
For Best Ongoing Game, the competitors were Destiny 2, Diablo IV, Final Fantasy 14, and Helldivers 2. Helldivers 2 won the award, sparking a little bit of outrage from the community. Leaker HYPEX complained that Helldivers 2 only came out nine months ago. In their eyes, that makes it harder to be a true ongoing game. The leaker also said the game’s “biggest updates are getting banned from half the planet and adding vehicles” but it still beat out Fortnite.
Fortnite is likely to be a yearly contender in these two categories until the game is shut down. Epic Games is one of the most dedicated developers out there, and they will always support the community with updates. Examples include the recent Chapter 6 patch. And since the game doesn’t end, it’s likely going to be eligible for ongoing game awards forever. Therefore, it will have those two nominations possible every year. However, as evidenced by The Game Awards 2024, it can’t win every time.
