Rising is a Hit, Other Games Should Follow in Its Footsteps

Recently, Destiny: Rising’s Closed Alpha ended, allowing thousands of players worldwide to try out the latest Destiny game before its official release. While no official release date for the game is currently set, Destiny: Rising players will enter an entirely new solar system set in an alternate universe from Destiny 1 and 2 once it releases. This will not only allow fans to play Destiny on a different platform but have them view Guardians’ early history from a brand-new perspective. While it’s unknown how longtime Destiny players will respond to this new timeline, it may be beneficial for other popular games such as Halo and God of War to explore alternate universes in new games.

Halo’s Fracture Alternate Universes Explained

Halo’s alternate universes detailed so far include:

  • Belos
  • Bioroid
  • Blackguard
  • Drengr
  • Entrenched
  • Megaframe
  • Panzerdoll
  • Silver Timeline
  • Tenrai

For older Halo fans, the concept of alternate universes may seem out of place at first, but Halo Studios has already introduced several alternate timelines into Halo’s lore. First introduced in Halo: The Master Chief Collection Season 8: Mythic, Fractures were introduced as divergent timelines from Halo’s core history. Each of these universes have so far only been referenced or explored via pieces of Spartan armor from those timelines. No novel or expanded story has been in an alternate Halo universe save for the Silver Timeline, which was the setting for Paramount Plus’ Halo TV series. Little is also known about the status of the Covenant, Flood, and Forerunners in these timelines as well, with information primarily focusing on humanity.

While alternate Halo timelines were first explored in Halo 3, Halo 2: Anniversary, and Halo: Reach within The Master Chief Collection, new universes have been introduced in Halo Infinite’s three-year-long lifespan. Belos was the first alternate universe introduced. Here, Earth was altered when classic Greek and Roman culture persisted, inevitably leading to Greco-Roman global powers to create Spartan-like Chosen warriors. Halo Infinite later introduced the Entrenched and Tenrai universes. Entrenched is a dieselpunk-like reality similar to Fallout and Killzone wherein super troopers fought against the Covenant and their arcanotechnology. Tenrai is a Samurai-inspired reality wherein warriors of 343 clans unite to fight against Covenant barbarians and their glass dragons.

The Potential of a Fractures-Focused Halo Game

Despite the vague details currently known about the Halo Fractures universes, there’s still a lot of potential for one or more games set in these alternate timelines. One could be a Ghost of Tsushima-like open world game set in the Tenrai universe focusing on one warrior fighting off invading Covenant forces and could feature the beloved Hayabusa armor. Another could be set in the Belos universe and feature more mythical or magical elements to distance itself from the mainline Halo games. Halo Studios can additionally make a singular Fractures game collecting a series of short campaigns set in each alternate universe to broaden the storytelling found in Halo’s expanding multiverse.

God of War’s Potential With Alternate Universes

Unlike Halo, there’s currently no official reference to alternate universes within the lore of God of War. However, there are multiple references to time travel, as Kratos and his allies are shown to travel in time throughout the franchise. In God of War 2, Kratos kills the Sisters of Fate and acquires the Loom of Fate to travel back to the beginning of the game to kill Zeus at the time of the thunder gods’ initial betrayal. Later, in God of War Ragnarok, the World Serpent Jormungandr is sent back in time well before he was born during his battle with Thor. With this precedent of time travel, future God of War games could possibly explore alternate timelines.

One future God of War game could have Atreus encounter alternate versions of Kratos, causing him to face his father’s past sins first hand. One alternate Kratos could feature a form of God of War 3’s original ending concept with Kratos becoming a grim reaper-like being, while another alternate Kratos might have never lost his role as Greece’s god of war. Atreus could additionally encounter a timeline wherein Kratos never lost his first wife Lysandra and daughter Calliope, possibly showcasing how much of a better life Kratos could have had, even if it meant Atreus was never born. Having a future God of War game set in an alternate version of the past like Destiny: Rising could help Norse-era fans learn more about the Greek-era God of War games.
