One Piece Characters Whose Appetites Rival Luffy

One Piece Characters Whose Appetites Rival Luffy

Key Takeaways

  • Wapol’s greed is depicted in his ability to eat anything with his Devil Fruit power.
  • Ace, Luffy’s brother, shares a large appetite and love for meat.
  • Jewelry Bonney’s tragic past led to her becoming known for her huge appetite.

Monkey D. Luffy has a huge appetite. His hunger is for adventure and freedom, but also, most glaringly, food. The straw hat is a big eater, whose infamous appetite is not strictly limited to the meat he so loves. He notably committed “snackalism” in Whole Cake Island, a presumed criminal offense where one vandalizes a building by snacking on it.

Throughout One Piece, these unsavory pirates fought alongside Monkey D. Luffy to face a greater foe.

Yet in the greater context of the series, he is merely one of many big eaters who have made themselves known. While many a character is seen eating, these characters and their hunger go above and beyond, to a point where, even next to Luffy, one cannot deny their appetites.

7 Wapol

Ruler of the Evil Black Drum Kingdom

One Piece Wapol at Levely

  • Affiliation: Evil Black Drum Kingdom, Bliking Pirates
  • Favorite Food(s): Baked Houses

Wapol is notable in part for his immense greed. As the former ruler of Drum Kingdom, Wapol was hated by his own people, as he chose to keep the kingdom for himself rather than aid his subjects. He was eventually exiled, after fleeing once the Blackbeard Pirates came, but forcibly returned once the danger had passed. His greed is reflected in his Devil Fruit, the Baku Baku no Mi, which allows him to eat the normally inedible, and transform into whatever he’s eaten.

He is seen eating throughout his fight with Luffy, to the extent that he could transform and strengthen himself by doing so. He could also fuse sentient beings with objects he had eaten, provided he had eaten them as well. Despite this, he was eventually defeated and exiled once more. After spending some time rampaging and eating entire towns, Wapol was eventually arrested. Becoming homeless, Wapol ate tons of garbage, as well as a dog that peed on him, out of sheer desperation. The ultimate result of this binge was a bunch of strange toys which he sold to make a living. He used the momentum of this initial success to become a wealthy CEO and eventually was gifted another Kingdom for his efforts.

6 Portgas D. Ace

Second Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates

Portgas D. Ace as he appears from the One Piece anime

  • Affiliation: Whitebeard Pirates, Spade Pirates (Formerly)
  • Favorite Food(s): Spaghetti with Ghost Peppers and Bear Meat

Ace was one of Luffy’s two sworn elder brothers. At his father, Gol D. Roger’s behest, Monkey D. Garp looked after him, from a distance, and he grew up alongside Luffy. Despite the pair not being blood-related, it is clear the two rubbed off on each other a great deal. Ace and Luffy notably ate alongside one another in their youth, although Ace is apparently a bit more selective in which meat he classifies as his “favorite.”

These characters were all given the opportunity to join the Straw Hat Pirates, but have yet to do so.

In his own adventures, Ace is shown to have a comically large appetite, similar to Luffy. Ace notably consumed a large meal at the Spice Bean, when he was confronted by Smoker. He also crashed the Buggy Pirates’ ship because he smelled food on deck, and decided to help himself. While not shown as often as Luffy’s, Ace is at least displayed to have a similar appetite to his brother.

5 Jewelry Bonney

A Super-Hungry Supernova

  • Affiliation: Bonney Pirates, Straw Hat Pirates
  • Favorite Food(s): Pizza Margherita

The presumed daughter of the revolutionary leader, Ginny, and an unknown World Noble who forced Ginny to wed him, the 12-year-old pirate’s moniker makes it clear that she is a big eater. Being both the youngest member of the Worst Generation and its sole female pirate, her achievements hide a tragic past. She was raised as the daughter of Bartholomew Kuma, Ginny’s lover before he was forcibly converted into a Pacifista for the sake of protecting her.

Since she took to the sea, Bonney’s appetite became her moniker. Most notably, she ordered a large meal at a restaurant located in Grove 24 and had incredibly poor table manners, which disgusted her fellow supernova, Capone Bege. She has since befriended the Straw Hat Pirates, developing an especially great rapport with their captain, Luffy, another big eater.

4 Marshall D. Teach

‘Admiral’ of the Blackbeard Pirates

Blackbeard from One Piece with Red Eyes Clenching His Fist

  • Affiliation: Blackbeard Pirates, Whitebeard Pirates (Formerly)
  • Favorite Food(s): Kebab and Cherry Pie (especially from Jaya)

Marshall D. Teach is poised as one of Luffy’s greatest rivals, with his hand in the deaths of Ace and Whitebeard becoming a strong reason for Luffy to despise the pirate. Since their last face-to-face encounter during the Summit War, both have ascended to the rank of Emperor, becoming two of the four pirate captains the World Government sees as the most threatening.

The nature of their rivalry is shown in their first meeting at Jaya. The pair sat next to each other in a bar. Not knowing each other, they merely remarked on their strong feelings towards the cherry pie they both ate. Teach loved it, whilst Luffy was disgusted by the taste. They once again had contrasting thoughts about the soda they drank. Afterward, they ordered takeout and their argument nearly escalated into a full-scale fight. This can be seen as an analogy of their ambitious natures, which are similar in size, but ultimately differ in terms of the actions they will take to satisfy them.

3 Charlotte Linlin

Captain of the Big Mom Pirates

Charlotte Linlin in One Piece

  • Affiliation: Big Mom Pirates, Rocks Pirates (Formerly)
  • Favorite Food(s): Sweet Confectioneries

This former Emperor was known to rule through fear, with her boundless appetite reflected in the nature of her domain. Her destructive nature forced her parents to abandon her in Elbaf, in the hopes that Mother Carmel would look after her. Linlin’s own hunger became a significant issue for her during the Winter Solstice festival, where residents were forced to fast for 12 days. On the 7th day, Linlin went on a destructive rampage and killed the Giant Warrior Pirates Co-Captain, Jorul. After being moved onto another island, Carmel intended to traffic Linlin to the World Government. However, she, along with all the other orphans Carmel took care of, was likely devoured by Linlin, who awoke with Carmel’s Devil Fruit Powers.

Since then, Linlin’s own hedonistic tendencies have gotten the better of her, with her hunger transforming her into a far more destructive and irritable entity in the rare events in which she isn’t fed. She will often visit pain and, in extreme cases, death, upon those who seek to defy her. It took the combined might of Eustass Kid and Trafalgar D. Water Law to defeat her, and even now it’s unclear if she died or not.

2 Charlotte Katakuri

Sweet Commander of the Big Mom Pirates

charlotte katakuri

  • Affiliation: Big Mom Pirates
  • Favorite Food(s): Doughnuts

Katakuri is, save for his mother, presumably the strongest of the Big Mom Pirates. He, notably, was able to fight on par with Monkey D. Luffy, with both walking away from their battle with mutual respect for one another. Their combat prowess is far from their only shared trait, however. Katakuri is also something of a glutton.

Having developed a habit of wolfing down his food, Katakuri gained a pelican-eel-like mouth, which caused others to shun him. He was bullied, but always strong enough to fight back against those who picked on him. However, some bullies later cut the face of his half-sister, Brûlée, to get revenge. This incident resulted in a scar that is still noticeable in the present day. Blaming himself for the attack, Katakuri concealed his face with a scarf and decided to become a truly ruthless pirate. To uphold his image, he only eats lying down, and does this in secret, to uphold a rumor that he never lies on his back.

These former antagonists will likely return to the story in some form or another.

However, Luffy exposes the truth about his face, which causes one of his younger half-sisters, Flampe, to mock him. Despite his loss to Luffy, Katakuri is still a well-respected member of the crew, as one of its Three Sweet Commanders. He is favored by many of his siblings to act as the crew’s captain in his mother’s absence.

1 York

Vegapunk’s Greed

York from One Piece anime

  • Affiliation: The Five Elders, Dr. Vegapunk (Formerly)
  • Favorite Food(s): Hamburgers

The genius scientist Dr. Vegapunk managed to split his being into six individuals known as satellites. Each satellite embodied a key aspect of the good doctor, while also having connected access to his knowledge and memories. York notably embodied Vegapunk’s aspect of “greed.” York was a particularly practical individual to keep around, taking care of the eating, rest, and bodily functions, so the other satellites could be unimpeded in their work.

However, her inherently greedy nature caused her to sabotage her fellow satellites and creators. While the other satellites, including Lilith, Vegapunk’s literal aspect of “evil”, found themselves disgusted with the World Nobles, York wished to become one of them. Since the Egghead Incident, she has succeeded, becoming a direct underling to Figarland Garling, the newest of the Five Elders. Seeing as Garling is the Warrior God of Science and Defense, a being with the mind of Vegapunk is likely a valuable subordinate for him. Since their discovery of this heel turn, the other satellites destroyed York’s spare parts, ensuring she would not be reborn in the event of her death.
