Star Rail’s ‘Sunday Trailer’ of plagrism, might consider legal action

Onmyoji Honkai Star Rail, Onmyoji accuses Honkai Star Rail copyright infringement

  • NetEase Games’ Onmyoji has accused HoYoverse’s Honkai: Star Rail of copying content from its cutscenes.
  • Onmyoji’s official Weibo account indirectly criticized the situation and confirmed that their legal team is investigating potential violations.
  • Fans have observed that the similarities are also seen with NetEase’s Identity V.

NetEase Games role-playing title Onmyoji has been in the news following the release of the ‘Sunday Trailer’ by Honkai: Star Rail, accusing the same of copying its content. The RPG from HoYoverse appears to have drawn similarities between its Sunday trailer and one of the CGs from Onmyoji, which has caught the attention of many players who also believe it to be a case of plagiarism.

Honkai Star Rail recently released the Sunday Trailer – “Soloist” featuring its 5-star limited character, Sunday. While as expected the video was well received and lauded by fans, it also caught the eye of some players for unwanted reasons.

Honkai: Star Rail’s new trailer has eerily similar CGs with NetEase Games’ titles

From what the players observed, several scenes from the new Honkai: Star Rail trailer are said to be strikingly similar to story cutscenes from Onmyoji. This was surprisingly very accurate, and of course, it was quickly shared amongst the player base. However, the issue gained more traction after Onmyoji mocked HoYoverse over these similarities in their Weibo post.

Onmyoji’s official account subtly criticized the situation without explicitly naming Honkai: Star Rail. In what seemed to be a subtle dig on originality as per the translation, the post was about Onmyoji’s commitment to original aesthetics, world-building, and storytelling. It also called companies to “pay attention to product ingenuity”.

Hours later, under the same post, the makers confirmed that their legal team was investigating potential intellectual property violations and were prepared to defend their rights if necessary. If evidence of copyright infringement is found, they are prepared to take legal action against HoYoverse.

However, to make matters worse, some fans have also pointed out that the controversy extends beyond Onmyoji, as similarities with Identity V have also been noticed. This again, is an IP from NetEase Games.

Currently, no official statement has been issued by HoYoverse. As the investigation is ongoing, it remains to be seen whether NetEase Games will proceed with taking the legal route. I’ll keep you updated with the latest info until then give the new trailer a look to see if the comparisons hold true for you.
