When we last heard news of Total Chaos, a storied Doom 2 total conversion mod, we only knew that its creator, ‘WadaHolic’, planned to launch the project as a standalone ‘remastered’ game. The shooter already looked like a great, ominous accompaniment to WadaHolic’s Turbo Overkill, but it’s now been re-revealed with a launch window and demo announcement trailer — one that shows off a drastic visual overhaul making Total Chaos resemble triple-A horror shooters like FEAR, Resident Evil, or Dead Space. Even better, everyone is about to get an opportunity to try this new version out for themselves very soon.
Total Chaos first came out as a Doom 2 mod back in 2018, but a remastered standalone take on the FPS game was announced in 2022. Now, years later, we can finally see what the abandoned mining outpost setting of Fort Oasis looks like in a new engine through a gameplay trailer that shows off its ‘remastered’ visuals.
In short: Total Chaos now has a much, much more foreboding atmosphere. In the trailer, we see the eyes of horrific creatures glow from out of deep shadows and waves crash against the cliffs of the outpost’s island setting. The player wanders a misty graveyard, clutches a sledgehammer as they explore a crumbling brick building, and, most memorably, lights a flare in a dark cavern to reveal walls covered in screaming faces.
We were already confident that Total Chaos would play well based on the standalone mod and WadaHolic’s work on Turbo Overkill. This new trailer, though, has us looking forward to a potentially terrifying mood to go along with the action.
Total Chaos is set to launch sometime in 2025, with a demo arriving early next year. Wishlist it on Steam right here.
