Moonlighter 2 brings back the cult hit roguelike, bigger and better than ever

A true cult hit is finally returning for more, as Moonlighter 2 has officially been revealed, some six years after the first. Daring merchant Will is back, and he’s tackling even more complex dungeons this time around, thankfully with a few more tricks up his sleeve too.

The first Moonlighter didn’t quite set the world on fire upon release in 2018, but word-of-mouth managed to garner a fervent following for the charming roguelike game. The concept was clever: you’re a shopkeeper, Will, who plays Indiana Jones at night by exploring caves and other areas full of danger and intrigue.

You’d have to balance his regular life with his moonlighting dalliance (hence the title), creating a deep, captivating RPG game. The response was strong enough that developer Digital Sun released a DLC in 2019, Between Dimensions, and now we have a full-on follow-up to jump into.

You can see the greater ambition straight off the bat. The 16-bit-esque art of the first has been replaced with smoother looking full 3D, retaining the isometric view that we’ve also seen in games like Tunic. The areas and encounters in Moonlighter 2 look considerably bigger and more daunting as a result.

The gameplay loop has gotten deeper too. You’re digging through various ‘vaults’ (hence the subtitle The Endless Vault) in order to find treasures to sell, then pricing and displaying your items so people come to respect your antiquities. Meanwhile, part of your spending in the fantasy game will go towards helping your friends, as well. Supporting those around you can be a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it. You’ll have plenty more weapons and other items to assist you as well – after all, Will’s not an amateur any more.

Moonlighter 2 The Endless Vault is coming to PC in 2025, and you can check out the Steam page here. The original is available too, as well as Cataclismo, another Digital Sun release and lowkey one of the best strategy games of the year.
