Dragon Age: The Veilguard has introduced great new companions to a series known for its beloved character writing. Players are having a great time bringing these new faces with them into battle, but there are some old friends that might still be missed.

Some characters from previous games make appearances, including Dorian from Dragon Age: Inquisition and Isabella from Dragon Age 2. In addition, Morrigan once again returns as an active character after her first appearance in Dragon Age: Origins and her return in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Even so, there are some characters who would have been a great match for this new northern setting.

8 Anders

A Chance At Redemption

Anders, a human mage who first appears in Dragon Age: Origins and returns in Dragon Age 2, may have had quite the explosive exit to the series. Still, there are some narrative threads that Veilguard could be poised to wrap up, even if many characters may not be so happy to see him.

Although Varric mentions his safe escape from the city of Kirkwall in Dragon Age: Inquisition, it would be interesting to see his reaction to the war between mages and templars, the development of the Inquisition, or the changes Solas and the other elven gods are making to the Veil. Anders could also create some interesting conflict, as his morals more closely align with Solas: Both are mages willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals.

7 Sten

Another Perspective On Qunari Culture

Sten was the first Qunari companion in the Dragon Age series. Allowing him to return, having renounced his position in the Antaam, would give players a look into this culture from a character that once found his home within it. Conversations between Taash and Sten would be incredibly interesting and could make for some great character development for them both, since, in Veilguard, Taash is the only Qunari on Rook’s team

It would also be interesting to see how an ex-Antaam leader would interact with the Crows in Treviso: Would he be a welcome asset or a wary ally?

6 Sera

Would Fit Right In With The Tone Of Veilguard

While there are references to Sera and her “people” in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, including a unique grenade belt that casts bees, Sera’s presence is regretfully nonexistent. Her quick wit and love for common folk would fit right in with the tone of Veilguard, and Rook’s team is missing a rogue with that traditional fantasy feel. And after all, who wouldn’t want to see her steal some Venatori pants?

She may be a more divisive companion, but what makes her controversial would be the same traits that would make her a great Veilguard companion: making no sense and taking nothing seriously. Plus, Sera would have some fascinating takes on the class structure in the highly stratified Tevinter.

5 Cole

A Little More Compassion

Since a potential outcome for Cole to be wandering the Fade after the events of Dragon Age: Inquisition, it would make perfect sense for him to appear in the lighthouse. His unique relationship with Solas would make for great interactions between the two now that Solas’ semi-godhood is known. Learning that elves potentially come from spirits might also be interesting information for Cole and his identity struggle between humanity and spirithood.

Cole would have even made an interesting substitute for the Caretaker or, if he leaned into his humanity in Inquisition, a friendly face among the wounded in whatever city the player chooses not to help in the “A Warden’s Best Friend” quest.

4 Iron Bull

The Iron Bull, To Be Precise

• First Appearance: Heroes of Dragon Age

No one would be more excited about fighting two dragons at once than Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s Iron Bull. Though the team already has a designated dragon hunter in Taash, Iron Bull would provide some great banter between existing companions and would definitely have plenty of cause to utilize his skills. That is if Rook can afford him.

Iron Bull would have some interesting things to add to Taash’s character development, given his relationship with Krem in Inquisition and his knowledge of traditional Qunari concepts of gender. Perhaps he could serve as a fatherly figure who could help them understand both themselves and their mother better.

3 Zevran

A Murderer Of Crows

• First Appearance: Dragon Age: Origins

Some players have noted that the Crows seem a little more tame in Dragon Age: The Veilguard than in previous games, and who better to unearth that history than Zevran? Mentioned briefly in notes and dialog as the Crow that halted the assassins’ activity in Fereldan, Zevran would be an excellent addition to bring in some of the gray morality of the Crows front and center.

Of course, he would have to make some kind of peace with Lucanis in order to join Rook, but maybe a little conflict among companions would be welcome.

2 Merrill

Everyone’s Favorite Blood Mage

• First Appearance: Dragon Age: Origins

Merrill, a Dalish blood mage who first appeared in Dragon Age: Origins and returned as a companion in Dragon Age 2 would fit right in at the lighthouse. She repairs her own eluvian in Dragon Age 2, which must have an entrance in the crossroads. Her interest in ancient elven culture and magic would make her an excellent asset against the gods, and her use of blood magic would be especially interesting in the Veilguard setting (though perhaps difficult to pull off mechanically).

Her relationship with fellow Dalish magic expert Bellara would be a sight to see, though perhaps the two overlap too much in both skillset and personality to exist in the same game.

1 Fenris

Elven Gods, Eat Your Heart Out

Gamers had their fingers crossed for at least a Fenris cameo in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but sadly, it was not to be. He would fit perfectly into the ranks of the Shadow Dragons, given his goal of ending slavery in Tevinter (though maybe his preferred method, killing every single magister, would be too extreme for the group).

Writers have also said that his tattoos are extremely difficult to add to a game, requiring his own individual body model. Still, Fenris is a fan favorite, and given the Tevinter setting, it would have been great to see him rip out some Venatori hearts on the streets of Minrathous.
