Dragon Age 5 May Not Be Set In Thedas

The Veilguard Could Never Do Tevinter Justice

Key Takeaways

  • The directors of Dragon Age: The Veilguard appear confident the series has a future.
  • Creative director John Epler is fascinated by the lands beyond Thedas.
  • There are plenty of references to lands beyond Thedas in the existing lore.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard directors Corinne Busche and John Epler held an ask-me-anything (AMA) on Reddit for Dragon Age Day, an annual celebration of BioWare’s fantasy RPG series.

Several participants quizzed the pair on the future of the Dragon Age series. After all, Dragon Age: The Veilguard was in development for almost a decade and although it has performed well critically, the fanbase’s opinion is divided. Not to mention that the jury is still out on how the game performed commercially, with no social media posts from BioWare and Electronic Arts lauding the game’s performance.

Essentially, fans aren’t convinced another Dragon Age title is guaranteed. The pair seem confident of a future for the series, but nobody can predict what will happen several years into the future. However, if we do get a scenario where there is a Dragon Age 5, Epler has revealed he’s “fascinated” by the lands beyond Thedas.

The Lands Beyond

“I don’t think it’s any secret that I find the idea of ‘what lies across the sea’ to be fascinating. It shows up a lot in Bellara’s content – what happened in parts of the world that weren’t Thedas?” Epler says. “But Kal-Sharok is another place I’d love to spend more time in. It has a very unique relationship to dwarven culture, and particularly in a post [Dragon Age: The Veilguard] world, it feels like it’d be super interesting to get more time with them.”

Several lands beyond Thedas have been referenced throughout the series, but we’ve never had the opportunity to visit any. The Qunari, for example, didn’t originally come from Par Vollen, but were fleeing something beyond the Boeric Ocean. Then there are the Voshai, travellers (primarily Dwarves) who come from a “cataclysmic” land over the Volca Sea.

Sten The Qunari After Some Years

We know from recent Dragon Age literature that a shadowy group called the Executors is in operation in Thedas, representing enemies “across the sea.” Even closer to home, there is a land adjacent to Thedas, cut off from the continent by the Hunterhorn Mountains. This is where the Warden supposedly travels to investigate the Blight, should they survive the events of Dragon Age: Origins.

All in all, there’s plenty of established scope for future Dragon Age writers to explore if we do eventually get a Dragon Age 5.
