Payday 3 is going back to where it all began in an upcoming free update

I’ve got nothing but respect for the effort Starbreeze continues to put into Payday 3. At the tail end of 2023, all seemed lost for the sequel, especially when compared to the ongoing success of Payday 2, but that’s slowly been turning around. Starbreeze has spent this year chipping away at some of the shooter’s most severe problems while adding fresh content to keep players coming back. Now, Payday 3 is returning to 2011 with a new version of the first game’s initial heist, and it’s free for all players.

That’s right, Starbreeze is taking us back to where it all started with the Payday 3 First World Bank heist. The free legacy heist is scheduled for December, and will bring back the very first mission from the original Payday game. That means Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf’s first-ever robbery will be added to the FPS game incredibly soon.

Starbreeze’s official First World Bank reveal came alongside a new development blog, which sheds even more light on what 2025 looks like for the game. There’s going to be more DLC next year, but Starbreeze says the exact number of expansions hasn’t been decided yet. As for overhauling existing heists and increasing the randomization of these missions, Starbreeze says both are “on our radar.” Sadly, however, there’s no update yet on Payday 3’s full offline/solo game mode.

As the game goes into its second year, Starbreeze has confirmed that Payday 3 will have a smaller development team and less investment going forward. Now that Operation Medic Bag is coming to a close the studio will shift its focus onto adding new content to the shooter, with the First World Bank the start of this change in direction.

“The level of investment during Payday 3’s first year on the market, both through launched DLC and Operation Medic Bag, has been at an elevated level,” Starbreeze acting CEO Mats Juhl says. “Ahead of year two, we are confident in being able to continue delivering amounts of value to our players with a significantly lower level of investment.”
