Joe Berlinger has a good track record with true-crime cold cases, after he was largely responsible for the release of three men who were accused of murder as teenagers due to his Paradise Lost trilogy, which shed light on the case. He has his work cut out with the JonBenet Ramsey murder, and recently revealed what to expect in the upcoming true-crime series:

Many people think they know the JonBenét Ramsey story and have played armchair detective for three decades, often callously pointing a finger at the very people who suffered such an unthinkable loss. Through unprecedented access and a comprehensive multi-year investigation, we reveal the deep flaws in how the case was originally handled, resulting in a sea of conspiracy theories that nearly destroyed the Ramsey family for a second time.

The True Story of JonBenet Ramsey’s Murder

Christmas 1996 will forever be etched into the memories of the residents of Boulder, Colorado for all the wrong reasons. It was the holiday season from hell for John and Patsy Ramsey, after their daughter, JonBenet, disappeared from the family home on December 25. The six-year-old pageant beauty queen was later discovered brutally murdered in the basement of the family home, after a ransom note had been left. The case didn’t make any sense, and the police were truly stumped by what had happened. The suspicion was thrust upon John and Patsy, and nearly 30 years later, the case still remains unsolved.

Amateur sleuths became obsessed with the mystery surrounding JonBenet Ramsey’s death, and countless true crime documentaries have been made about the case, each one trying to figure out who the culprit was. The autopsy revealed what happened to JonBenet and it was truly shocking. She died by strangulation, and she had been sexually assaulted. One theory suggested JonBenet had been killed by her brother, Burke, and it had been covered up by John and Patsy in order to protect him, and the police also suspected the ransom note had been forged. It appeared that the police botched the investigation and focused too much on JonBenet’s parents, and missed crucial evidence. For instance, in the basement where JonBenet’s body was found, an unidentified boot print was later discovered. In addition to this, there was a broken window which could have been an entry point for an intruder via the basement. DNA was also found on JonBenet’s underwear, and it was never identified. So many questions, but so few answers.

Years went by, and the case still stumped law enforcement. However, in 2006, district attorney Mary Lacy took over the case, and finally, John and Patsy Ramsey had someone who believed their version of events.

The Boulder District Attorney’s Office does not consider any member of the Ramsey family, including John, Patsy, or Burke Ramsey, as suspects in this case. We make this announcement now because we have recently obtained this new scientific evidence that adds significantly to the exculpatory value of the previous scientific evidence. We do so with full appreciation for the other evidence in this case.

Patsy Ramsey sadly died of ovarian cancer in 2006, never knowing what happened to her daughter. John Ramsey is 80 years old now, and is still seeking answers. He appears in Netflix’s new series, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey?, and there is renewed hope that this re-investigation into the shocking true story can finally uncover the mystery of who was responsible for the brutal murder of JonBenet Ramsey.
